Description

Four service members are confirmed dead and dozens more were seriously injured following an explosion and fire on Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. A preliminary investigation suggests a munition from a live training exercise sparked a fast-moving grass fire, which caused an explosion, according to multiple military sources who spoke to Global News. As Jeff Semple reports, the circumstances surrounding the fire and the full extent of its impact remain unclear. CFB Wainwright is one of the busiest army bases in Canada, with tens of thousands of soldiers having been trained there over the years. About 200 kilometres east of Edmonton, the base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, the Third Canadian Division Training Centre, and about 12 'lodger' military units that have their own chain of command. The base also has multiple weapons ranges and an airfield. Global's Mackenzie Gray takes a deeper look at what goes on there. Violent protests taking over the streets of some major European cities have turned deadly. In Paris, officers in riot gear faced off with demonstrators in one of France's most violent protest movements in recent history. As Candice Cole reports, more than 2,000 people have been arrested and hundreds of police officers have been injured. Plus, If Albertans choose to continue on a path to separation, the implications would be enormous. Business groups such as the Chamber of Commerce have been vocal about the risks, but few CEOs of publicly traded companies have gone on the record. However, Nancy Southern, CEO and chair of a multi-billion dollar company in Alberta, is standing up for Canada in the Alberta referendum. Dawna Friesen spoke with her on Friday.
