CFB Wainwright: Community in shock after fire, explosion at Canadian military base

Description

Residents in the town of Wainwright, Alta., about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, have come together in the aftermath of a deadly explosion and fire at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday evening. Bruce Pugh, mayor of Wainwright, said the Canadian military base and neighbouring town are “like a family” as he reacted to the tragedy that left at least seven people dead and dozens more injured. The explosion was caused by a live-fire training exercise hitting a gas line or gas well on the base around 4 p.m. MT, multiple Canadian Armed Forces sources told Global News. The resulting fire, fuelled by high winds, spread rapidly, beyond the boundaries of the training exercise. Quinn Ohler reports.
