‘The hardest years of my life’: Cambridge scientist David Sabatini speaks out after courtroom victory

But the latest development — when a Suffolk County jury last week unanimously awarded him $6 million in damages in his civil lawsuit against Knouse, while dismissing her claims of retaliation and harassment against him — are scenes he describes in vivid detail. How the light went off on the court officer’s desk, indicating the jury had reached a verdict. How the clerk passed the envelope with their decision to the judge, and then back to the foreperson who read each count aloud. How he did not react to the announcement of damages awarded to him, but grabbed his brother’s hand as all of Knouse’s counts were dismissed. “I don’t know if I still believe it, to be honest with you,” he said in a phone interview Sunday. Knouse, contacted through her lawyer, Ellen Zucker, declined to comment. She will appeal the ruling, Zucker said. The last five years, as Sabatini fell from a prominent biologist who generated Nobel Prize buzz to an outsider who schools refused to work with, were “the hardest years of my life,” he said.

Jets feel they’re close to contending, but leave Foxborough with a familiar result

FOXBOROUGH — Geno Smith sat at his locker with his shoulders slumped, staring blankly at the iron grey carpet in the visitor’s locker room of Gillette Stadium. The Jets quarterback stoically held his gaze, his mind adrift after absorbing a 26-19 loss to the Patriots. Smith wasn’t alone in having a muted reaction postgame. Rookie defensive end David Bailey faced his locker with a jet black hoodie pulled over his head, his head in his hands facing his metal locker. There was no music blaring. The lone sound emanating was hangers clanging around. Only a few players looked at their phones. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson, held to four catches for 44 yards, sat with his back to the room in the corner, quietly speaking to a couple of teammates. Leaving the field, it was more of the same. Fans tried for high fives, to no avail. Defensive end Kingsley Enagbare grabbed at his hair in frustration. The irritation stems from a seventh-consecutive loss to a divisional opponent and the team’s third straight trip to Gillette Stadium ending in defeat. Mike Vrabel forcefully challenged the Patriots defense, and it might’ve proved the difference Sunday

“Just talking noise: ‘When are you going to get a sack? When are you going to get the quarterback on the ground?’ ” Williams said of his coach’s approach. “You know him. You all know Vrabes, man … he’s an [expletive]. He’s going to be an [expletive]. That’s how he is,” he added with a small smile. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Continue to just challenge us, challenge us, challenge us. Week-in, week-out; day-in, day-out. And I think that’s just going to help us get better and better as we go.”No one can test Williams and the defense like Vrabel. And, as it turned out, those occasionally salty challenges from the coach — who called it a “lucky” victory — may have made the difference on Sunday. Get Point AfterGet exclusive analysis and insight on the Patriots and the NFL, delivered to your inbox on weekdays during the season. Enter Email“We made enough plays in critical situations to help us get through here today,” Vrabel said of his team, which held the Jets to 3 for 12 on third and fourth down. To be clear, it was not a sparking performance from Vrabel’s defense. Quarterback Geno Smith and his pesky offense kept hanging around through all four quarters.

V. — The Ohio Valley Hornets girls team took the court for the first time this fall season in Weirton, West Virginia, bringing together top basketball players from across the tri-state area for the third annual All Star Sunday. Organizers said families and community members turned out to support the event as the program continues to grow each year. The team selects players from seventh grade and up, with coaches choosing standout athletes to be part of the all-star roster. Paul Buffington, the head girls coach of the Ohio Valley Hornets, said participation has expanded again this year. “This year, each year keeps getting bigger. This year we had 58 girls from 26 tri-state schools throughout West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania,” Buffington said. Buffington said college coaches attended the event to help players gain exposure. “We have several college coaches on site here, and the idea is to get them their name and face out in front of them and get them noticed so that they can potentially get scholarships,” he said.

Shawn Oliver, GOP nominee for lieutenant governor, suspends campaign after OUI charge

“After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor,” Oliver said in a statement shared Sunday afternoon by a spokesperson for the state Republican Party. “This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”With early voting already underway and hundreds of thousands of people already having submitted their ballots by mail, Oliver’s name will remain on voters’ ballots alongside Minogue’s. Minogue said earlier Sunday that beyond calling on Oliver to end his campaign, he would “formally ask for his resignation” should both he and the New Bedford city councilor be elected Nov. 3. Minogue and Oliver were challenging Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, both first-term Democrats who have led the Republican nominees by a wide margin in public polling. A New Bedford police spokesperson said officers responded around 11:40 p.m.
