Maple Leafs’ Tavares out week-to-week with lower-body injury - TSN

Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the team announced on Saturday. The week-to-week designation means that he is expected to miss up to six weeks, according to the team. Tavares was injured during the team’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday in the third period after awkwardly colliding with Sabres forward Josh Norris. The 36-year-old centre remained down on the ice after the collision before skating off while favouring his left leg. Nick Paul slotted in as the team’s No. 2 centre during Saturday’s morning skate in Tavares’ absence in between Easton Cowan and Kirill Marchenko. Additionally, rookie Gavin McKenna took Tavares’ spot on the top power-play unit with Darren Raddysh, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander. Tavares has two goals and seven points in seven games early this season. He led the team with 31 goals last season to go along with 71 points and appeared in all 82 games for the first time since his first season with the Maple Leafs in 2018-19. The Maple Leafs sit sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 3-3-2 record as they get set to take on the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Alexander Zverev 'overachieved' with Shanghai semi-final run - BBC

Repeatedly exposed on the forehand side, Zverev surrendered his first break of the match to an exquisite backhand passing shot on the run as Davidovich Fokina took the semi-final to a deciding set. Zverev was broken to trail 2-0 in the third set and could not recover control of the tie as the 25th seed advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 final since 2022. Having failed to replicate the performance which earned him a straight-set win over Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final, Zverev said he has struggled since his fourth-round win over Alexander Bublik went to a third-set tie-break. "First, I'm not a robot, I'm a human being, I get tired," Zverev said. "After the US Open, I had one day off in total. I think I played a lot of tennis, which is very, very positive because that means I played well. "I think even here I had tough matches. I personally feel like I was quite flat since the Bublik match, because I was losing energy. "I played a phenomenal match against Alex de Minaur, but today I was flat. Even in the first set, even though I won the set, I was flatter, I was not reacting so well. I was returning quite badly. "We're all human beings, even the best players in the world.

UFC Edmonton predictions - MMA Fighting

The Mike Malott mission remains on track. Whether you believe Malott is The Next Great Canadian Hope or not, you have to credit the matchmakers with giving him every opportunity to prove he is. In April, he added one-time welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns to his hit list; tonight, he takes on another ranked opponent in Joaquin Buckley in the UFC Edmonton main event. The deck isn’t exactly stacked in Malott’s favor as Buckley was a rising contender himself not too long ago, but all Malott has asked for is his chance to move up the contender line and Buckley is the next man up. A few weeks shy of 35, Malott can’t afford any setbacks as a disappointing performance will put a hard cap on whatever potential he has left. Buckley has never lost three straight fights, so he has desperation on his side (for lack of a better term, I’m not sure someone with Buckley’s confidence ever feels truly desperate). The point is, he knows his back is to the wall and in a worst-case scenario, like Burns, losing to Malott could induce an existential crisis. Just win, Buck. In the co-main event, Erin Blanchfield and Jasmine Jasudavicius battle for a flyweight title shot… or do they?

The team has now put four games together in a row allowing chances accumulating to that amount or less. For context, they accomplished such a feat 30 times in 82 games a season ago, so four times in seven contests is a sign of improvement. It was the Capitals’ third-lowest expected-goal total of the season, following Buffalo’s lowest and Detroit’s and Nashville’s second-lowest marks through two-and-a-half weeks.

‘Business as usual’: Jacobs keeps emotions in check in grudge match win over Eriksson - The Grand Slam of Curling

By Jonathan Brazeau VICTORIA — It was the most anticipated game of the Co-op Invitational since the draw schedule was set: Canada’s Team Brad Jacobs versus Sweden’s Team Oskar Eriksson. A sizeable crowd was on hand Friday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre regardless, cheering on hometown heroes Team Taylor Reese-Hansen, but they were just as engaged and enthralled by the grudge match of Olympic proportions happening on the adjacent sheet. Here we are now. Entertain us. It was the first game between the two sides since their fiery round-robin encounter during the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina. Eriksson, then throwing third stones for legendary skip Niklas Edin, accused Team Jacobs third Marc Kennedy of illegally double-touching a rock. Colourful words were exchanged in the viral moment that became one of the hottest talking points of the Games, lingering on even as Jacobs went on to capture Olympic gold. With Edin stepping back and Eriksson taking the reins, he just so happened to slot into the same pool as Jacobs for the Co-op Invitational, the season’s first Grand Slam of Curling tournament. What a coincidence?

4 takeaways as Bruins come from behind for 4th straight win - Audacy

The Boston Bruins didn't look ready to go in the first period Friday night, and found themselves trailing the Anaheim Ducks 2-0 after 20 minutes as a result. Fortunately for them, they woke up for the remaining 40 minutes, mounted a comeback, and wound up winning 4-2 to extend their winning streak to four games. Here are 4 takeaways from the game:Special teams lead the wayThe Bruins weren't exactly feeling great about their special teams entering Friday night. The power play scored three times against Utah last week, but was 0-for-14 in the Bruins' other six games. The penalty kill, meanwhile, had allowed three goals on seven tries in the last two games, plus another goal just seconds after a penalty ended. Both units can feel a lot better after Friday night. The power play scored on its first three opportunities against an Anaheim penalty kill that ranked fourth in the NHL, swinging a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 lead in the process. The penalty kill, meanwhile, went 4-for-4 against a Ducks power play that entered the game ranked second in the NHL at 33.3%. The Bruins' first power-play goal came early in the second period.
