Description
Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed and dozens more were injured when a fast moving grass fire swept through a training area at CFB Wainwright on Saturday. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said 39 patients were receiving care, including at least 19 in critical condition with some facing months of treatment for severe burns. Major General Wade Rutland said range control had known about the fire for several hours before strong winds drove it roughly a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds, overtaking soldiers near a simulated attack range. The cause remains under investigation, with initial checks suggesting no damage to oil and gas infrastructure. Rutland said a formal military inquiry would take at least a month.
