Description
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is warning Stelco’s American owner it could face legal action and be forced to sell its Canadian operations unless it honours job commitments. The warning comes amid planned layoffs and steep U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel. “This isn’t just about one plant,” says Drew Fagan, professor at Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, arguing Ottawa’s response could set a precedent for other foreign owners. He joins Global’s Nivrita Ganguly to discuss what the dispute could mean for Canada’s steel industry.
