Description

Violent protests taking over the streets of some major European cities have turned deadly. In Paris, officers in riot gear faced off with demonstrators in one of France's most violent protest movements in recent history. More than 2,000 people have been arrested and hundreds of police officers have been injured. The riots started as a protest against the rising cost of living and poor education standards. Research scientist Paola Formenti says, "I think the protests are very legitimate. There is a lot of anger, there is a lot of difficulty in living and studying... I think the only way of actually avoiding this kind of violence is to answer to the protests of the people, to listen to them." Candice Cole has more.
