Description

Less than 48 hours after a disaster at the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) in Wainwright, Alta., there are still more questions than answers about exactly what triggered the fire that killed four military personnel and injured dozens of others. All four members were serving at CFB Edmonton with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry, and participating in a live-fire training exercise — equipped with a variety of grenades and ammunition — when a fast-moving grass fire swept through a training area at CFB Wainwright before the fatal explosion Saturday. Speaking Sunday, Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland said range control had known about the fire for several hours before strong winds drove it roughly a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds, overtaking soldiers near a simulated attack range. It wasn't initially considered a threat. From the impacted Alberta community, Global’s Sarah Ryan shares the latest, including what the Canadian Armed Forces has said about the tragedy amid intensive investigations.
