Description
Voting day has arrived in Alberta — not for a political party, but for the 10-question provincial referendum that has loomed over the heads of Albertans for the better part of 2026. While a focus of the Oct. 19 date has been on the question of whether Alberta should hold a second, binding referendum on separating from Canada, there are nine other questions Premier Danielle Smith is putting to residents. The vote, announced Feb. 19, initially contained nine questions to do with immigration and possible changes to Canada’s Constitution. Then on May 21, Smith announced a 10th question on separation was being added. Global’s Joel Gotlib reports on the latest, sharing the “on edge” atmosphere sweeping the province as a record turnout at the polls is projected.
