Despite what Hollywood movies and some police departments would have you believe, deadly car chases are far from the only way to thwart multi-million-dollar heists. French investigators used DNA evidence and vehicle tracking to recover two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, valued at $4.7 million, that were stolen in a brazen burglary in the South of France in September. Authorities also arrested six people allegedly tied to the heist. One suspected thief led police to his co-conspirators by simply driving to their homes.
As if ripped from the silver screen, our scene opens in the picturesque Nice suburb of Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera. The town hosts the Musée Renoir, a small gallery on the famed impressionist's hilltop farmhouse estate. On the morning of September 8, two thieves gained entry by cutting through the museum fence with an electric saw. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the duo then used the saw to slice off the bolts holding four paintings in place. All four works were on loan from the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has called an early finish to what she described as "one of the most challenging" seasons of her career. Poland's Swiatek failed to qualify for the end-of-season WTA Finals - for the first time since 2019 - after pulling out of the Ningbo Open on Tuesday with a thigh injury. Shortly afterwards, the 25-year-old announced she was bringing a largely barren season to a close, in order to recharge over a longer period of time before returning in 2027. Former long-time world number one Swiatek - who has ended a season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2021 - has dropped to ninth in the rankings. "The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense," said Swiatek, who will have an opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. "I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully, so that's exactly what I will do - [for] a bit longer this time. "Her most recent Grand Slam triumph came at Wimbledon last year. Swiatek has managed one WTA title this season - the Canadian Open in August - and ends 2026 with a 42-16 win-loss record.

BOSTON — Massachusetts voters will decide whether to expand the state’s public records law to include most records held by the Legislature and the governor’s office. Question 1 on the upcoming ballot would make most records from those two branches subject to the Massachusetts Public Records Law, similar to records that residents and news organizations can request from state agencies and local governments. Supporters argue the measure would bring greater transparency to Beacon Hill and give taxpayers more insight into how government decisions are made and public money is spent. Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio is backing Question 1. She also supported the successful 2024 ballot initiative that gave the state auditor authority to audit the Legislature. DiZoglio argues that Massachusetts has one of the least transparent state governments in the country and says the new ballot measure would give residents, news organizations and the state auditor greater ability to scrutinize government. “We have been trying to get information about how contracts are given out involving millions of taxpayer dollars,” DiZoglio said.
More companies are formally objecting to having tokenized versions of their shares available on the stock platform proposed by cryptocurrency exchange OKX and the New York Stock Exchange’s parent, the Intercontinental Exchange. In a notice updated Monday, the joint venture between OKX and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), called OKXICE, reported receiving 16 notices of issuer objection from companies including Microsoft, Google’s parent company Alphabet and Goldman Sachs. The objections did not include specific reasons for the notice to OKX, but one expert told Cointelegraph that they could relate to “not knowing what happens to their price” on the proposed platform. Speaking to Cointelegraph on Tuesday, OKXICE co-chair and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that these notices were “not objections,” citing the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) “opening up to a global 24/7 marketplace.” He characterized objections as some companies standing on the side of a pool while letting others jump in and test the waters for OKXICE’s tokenized stock model.
Manitoba store owners say they were not consulted on new provincial worker safety rules that could penalize independent retailers. While the government says it remains committed to consulting industry before any specific rules are in place, many independent retailers say they were not consulted. On October 5, the Manitoba government introduced a new bill it said would improve worker safety in cannabis stores by removing the provincial requirement to cover store windows and requiring mandatory minimum staffing levels during specified hours. While many retailers applauded the first change, some say the additional-employee requirement will harm smaller, independent stores and give larger chains more market share because they can absorb the costs. The provincial NDP government introduced Bill 56, The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Amendment Act, in early October and quickly passed it on October 13 with little debate and no committee amendments. Colleen Robbins, the Conservative MLA for Spruce Woods, raised concerns during second reading, saying the two-employee rule puts too much pressure on small businesses.

In 2026, Subaru celebrates the 60th anniversary of introducing its first boxer four-cylinder engine in 1966. The unit had modest beginnings, with a 977-cc flat-four making 55 horsepower to power the Subaru 1000. Since then, the flat powertrain layout has become inextricably linked to the brand. All-wheel drive, the brand's other hallmark, arrived in 1972. However, Subaru's boxer engine won't enjoy another major anniversary, at least in one market.
The US government is set to announce the certification of Boeing’s 737 Max 10 jet Tuesday after years of delays, a Transportation Department official told The Associated Press. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy plans to announce the decision on Tuesday afternoon during a visit to Boeing’s manufacturing plant in Everett, Washington, the official said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the certification ahead of the announcement. The 737 Max 10, which can have up to 230 seats, was introduced at the Paris air show in 2017 to help Boeing compete with rival Airbus. But a series of technical and safety-related concerns slowed the certification of the largest version of Boeing’s 737 Max. FAA authorization would clear the way for Boeing to begin delivering the Max 10 to airline customers. The company has said it expects to make the first deliveries in 2027. The military let training continue at CFB Wainwright on Saturday even though a fire had been burning on the base since noon and forecasts had already warned of high winds, dry conditions and an approaching cold front.
Hours later, a grass fire overtook soldiers during a live-fire exercise at the base, about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, killing four members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and injuring 39, 19 of them critically. The military says a sudden shift in wind turned a fire it believed was contained into a deadly one. “The fire was a kilometre away when the wind shifted. It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds,” said Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division. But satellite imagery reviewed by Global News and weather records reveal warning signs around four hours before the blaze expanded. Story continues below advertisement

A recent patent filing sheds light on the new shifter
Most car enthusiasts would agree that driving an EV isn't as enjoyable as driving a car with an engine and a transmission. Electric cars can be extraordinarily quick, but most lack the emotion that rev-heads crave. Fortunately, a new simulated transmission for EVs patented by Toyota may bring some much-needed fun to EVs. Hyundai pioneered simulated transmission technology on the Ioniq 5 N, and more recently added it to the Ioniq 6 N and Genesis GV60 Magma with its N car vibe.
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is criticizing Tate McRae's debut performance of "Housewife. "The Calgary-born pop sensation took the stage at the Victoria's Secret fashion show on Sunday night (Oct. 18) to perform her new single "Housewife" live for the first time, along with her hit singles "Sports Car" and "Dear God," wearing a sleek red lingerie ensemble that drew criticism from the author and mental health advocate formerly married to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Under Billboard Canada's Instagram post of the performance, Grégoire Trudeau writes, "Really? This is what we need to do now to make a mark as an artist? I like her music and she's talented but I see nothing empowering here; more like falling into the mold of people pleasing. " Sophie Grégoire Trudeau via InstagramBillboard Canada/InstagramAhead of its release, McRae described her song to Jimmy Fallon as an empowerment anthem, one that's "kind of about a woman who can’t be contained. " The Canadian pop star has explained the song is about wanting to be her own provider, to be rich, successful and her own housewife.
