‘It Represents an Evolution of the First-Person Shooter’ — Why Infinity Ward Is Giving Extraction Shooters Another Shot in Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ Mode

The last time Call of Duty attempted an extraction shooter, we were living in a world without Arc Raiders in it. The DMZ beta that came with 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 was a valiant first draft, but one that ultimately failed to hook a sizable player base with its shoot, loot, and extract loop. Now the genre’s outlook is seemingly very different, with a boom in player interest thanks to the initial success of Embark Studios’ sci-fi shooter at the back end of 2025. With its popularity not quite where it was some months ago, the jury remains out on whether extraction shooters will ever be able to topple the battle royale anytime soon, if ever. But Infinity Ward is willing to try to find that out for itself with Modern Warfare 4 and its DMZ mode — the studio’s second shot at such an idea. IGN spoke to Joe Cecot, Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer creative director, to learn all about why Call of Duty is returning to the extraction shooter, and what was learned from its MW2 beta. “The group of people that work on DMZ love DMZ, and they loved [the MW2 version]” reveals Cecot.

Wellesley woman accused of killing her two children indicted on murder charges

A Wellesley woman accused of killing her two children before fleeing to Vermont earlier this year was indicted Monday by a Norfolk County grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder, according to court records. Janette MacAusland, 49, is charged with killing her children, Ella, 6, and Kai, 7, in their Wellesley home. Police found the children dead on the night of April 24 after MacAusland arrived distraught and hysterical at her aunt’s house in southern Vermont, saying she’d killed them, authorities said. The indictments allege that MacAusland killed the children “on or about” April 22. The indictment moves the case from Dedham District Court to Norfolk Superior Court, where MacAusland could face life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder. She has been held without bail since her arrest. Her arraignment in Norfolk Superior Court has not been scheduled, prosecutors said. MacAusland was going through a contentious divorce with the children’s father at the time of the killings. Court records show her husband filed for divorce in October 2025, seeking full custody of the children and control of the Wellesley home.

Mass. House Democrats reject Healey’s ‘gimmick’ proposal to suspend state gas tax

Healey argued that a two-month gas tax suspension was a “responsible thing to do” amid a surge in gas prices driven by the war in Iran. A gallon of regular gas cost, on average, $4.26 in Massachusetts as of Tuesday, according to AAA; that’s more than a dollar higher than this time a year ago. But the idea immediately received a cool reception on Beacon Hill, where Democratic lawmakers have blocked attempts to suspend the tax before. State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, a North End Democrat who chairs the House’s budget-writing committee, said he is still “very skeptical” that a gas tax suspension would provide “any real savings to folks that are struggling with the affordability crisis that we’re facing.”“I would call it a gimmick policy, and it sounds nice,” Michlewitz said. “But it’s not something that is going to actually, when you get down to the mechanics of it ... provide real savings.”Spokespeople for Healey and Minogue did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Noah Wheeler Climbs Burden of Dreams V17 - Gripped Climbing Magazine

Earlier this year, Noah Wheeler climbed Burden of Dreams V17, one of the world’s hardest boulders. It took him seven sessions across two trips to unlock the problem. He had previously climbed Daniel Woods’ Return of the Sleepwalker, and Sean Bailey’s Shaolin, both V17. Wheeler just dropped a new film featuring his send, watch below. “Burden demanded something different than optimization for me to unlock it, it demanded reorientation,” Wheeler said on 8a.nu. After seven sessions across two trips, he finally locked in the final move. “I had a lot of difficulty sleeping the night before I sent, and I spent most of this time navigating my mental game, attempting to find a mental space in which I would be comfortable doing the last move. I found it, envisioned it, and when the session came, acted on it.”

Howard Webb backs VAR over Botman challenge on Jackson - BBC

Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb says Sven Botman's foul on Nicolas Jackson was a "high-end reckless challenge" but backed the video assistant referee's decision not to intervene for a red card. Botman was shown a yellow card - the correct sanction for a reckless tackle - by referee Jarred Gillett for the Newcastle centre-back's 18th minute challenge on Villa striker Nicolas Jackson on Saturday. The Dutch defender went in strongly and over the top of the ball, though contact on the opponent was with his trailing leg. "I think it's reckless," Gillett said of the challenge. "Even though you get a touch on the ball, it's still reckless. "The VAR, Stuart Attwell, decided to support the on-field call of a caution because there was "no secondary scissor action" and contact was "not with the studs". "I know the referee said yellow card but it was so high and hopefully maybe next time a red card, but it was a yellow," Jackson said after the game. "I nearly broke my leg, but anyway, it's part of football. "Webb says the on-field decision would have remained whether Gillett showed a yellow or a red card. Villa won the game 1-0 through a 36th-minute Johan Manzambi goal.

Uranus and Neptune Look Like Twins. Scientists Now Think It’s a Coincidence - Gizmodo

Despite the iconic documentary, Uranus and Neptune are arguably the real “blue planets” in our solar system. And their visual similarities in part convinced astronomers that they were evolutionary and chemical twins—but looks can deceive, as a new study has found. In short, the similarities we observe today between Uranus and Neptune may be a coincidence, according to research published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Studying recent measurements of carbon monoxide revealed that Neptune’s deep atmosphere has more oxygen than that of Uranus. Using this information, the team ran models to track regions of the protoplanetary disk—a rotating “platter” of gas and dust that forms planets—that birthed Uranus and Neptune. Surprisingly, the analysis strongly suggested that Uranus and Neptune weren’t from the same section of the protoplanetary disk, which would also give them different chemical origins. “Uranus and Neptune may resemble twins today, but their chemistry is telling us that they are more like cousins with very different histories,” Olivier Mousis, the study’s co-author and a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute, said in a statement.

McDonald’s drone drop at Quebec maximum-security prison highlights contraband risks

OTTAWA — It was after dark last Wednesday when a drone dropped silently from the sky over the special handling unit of a maximum-security prison in Quebec. Slipping into the gap between the chain-link fencing and the window — which was broken from the inside — it delivered its contraband contents to the man waiting within: a McDonald’s meal and a bottle of alcohol.

I’m natalie@theankler.comSpotify once ruled podcasting. Then YouTube came along and changed the game, turning the audio-first business into a video free-for-all and forcing Spotify to rethink how it keeps its most valuable talent — and their fans — close. Now the streaming giant has a new weapon in the increasingly fierce competition for creators: paid memberships. Starting today, podcasters can sell subscriptions directly through Spotify, offering everything from bonus episodes to ad-free listening. It’s a direct challenge to platforms like Patreon, which have spent years helping creators turn their most devoted fans into paying customers. Will creators bite?

On the road: Could Democrats make gains in battleground North Carolina? - Spectrum News

North Carolina is once again proving to be a battleground state this election. The U. S. Senate race between Democrat Roy Cooper and Republican Michael Whatley is a must win for Democrats if they want to take control of the Senate. And there are numerous U. S. House races in the state that could help decide control of power in Congress. In September, Spectrum News Washington Reporter Reuben Jones, who covers the North Carolina congressional delegation in D. C., spent a week on the road in the state. Jones has covered the state for more than nine years.

ReBlade: The Death Spiral First Preview – Parrying Through the Cyberpunk Roguelite

Key Preview Takeaways:Combat leans heavily into parrying. The demo we played shows promise, but we’re hoping for more depth in the final version. The concept feels like a mix of Alita: Battle Angel and Cyberpunk 2077. No other gameplay maneuver has had as much impact on modern action games as the parry. This ultimate skill suits both aggressive and defensive playstyles, letting you stylishly tip the scales of battle unscathed. Games like Sekiro, Lies of P, and the recent Onimusha: Way of the Sword lean into that focused combat style action fans have embraced. The upcoming ReBlade: The Death Spiral looks set to join that growing catalog of top-level action games that give you the tools and the satisfaction of tearing through enemies' defenses – this time within the framework of a roguelite. Developer ChillyRoom has created a blend of a dungeon-crawling roguelite and fast-paced action-brawler, which leans into the idea of a cunning cybernetic warrior slashing and parrying through an ever-changing setting. In our hands-on with the ReBlade: The Death Spiral demo, we got to play over two hours of varied runs.

Avis Billed a Man More Than $4000, Claiming He Drove 18,000 Miles in 7 Days

Family road trips are usually full of unexpected occurrences. Somebody needs to hit the restroom minutes after leaving the last stop; nobody agrees on where to get lunch; someone constantly wants to know how much longer until they get where they’re going. But according to one Avis bill, a Toronto man's trip also involved the sort of non-stop driving that would interest an endurance racing team, as the company charged him for covering almost 18,000 miles in a week. When one simply divides the mileage by the time allotted, the plausibility of the charge becomes comical. According to Toronto CityNews, Yuehao Huang rented a vehicle in Montreal on September 11 for a seven-day family trip. He says his phone recorded roughly 1400 km (870 miles) traveled during the journey, including walking. Yet Avis billed him for 28,933 km (17,978 miles), adding about CA $5900 (roughly $4200 at current exchange rates) to a prepaid rental costing more than CA $1000 ($710 USD). Let's do the math. Seven full days contain 168 hours, so covering the billed distance would require averaging 172 km/h (107 mph) throughout every one of them.
