Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has called an early finish to what she described as "one of the most challenging" seasons of her career. Poland's Swiatek failed to qualify for the end-of-season WTA Finals - for the first time since 2019 - after pulling out of the Ningbo Open on Tuesday with a thigh injury. Shortly afterwards, the 25-year-old announced she was bringing a largely barren season to a close, in order to recharge over a longer period of time before returning in 2027. Former long-time world number one Swiatek - who has ended a season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2021 - has dropped to ninth in the rankings. "The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense," said Swiatek, who will have an opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. "I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully, so that's exactly what I will do - [for] a bit longer this time. "Her most recent Grand Slam triumph came at Wimbledon last year. Swiatek has managed one WTA title this season - the Canadian Open in August - and ends 2026 with a 42-16 win-loss record.

Howard Webb backs VAR over Botman challenge on Jackson - BBC

Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb says Sven Botman's foul on Nicolas Jackson was a "high-end reckless challenge" but backed the video assistant referee's decision not to intervene for a red card. Botman was shown a yellow card - the correct sanction for a reckless tackle - by referee Jarred Gillett for the Newcastle centre-back's 18th minute challenge on Villa striker Nicolas Jackson on Saturday. The Dutch defender went in strongly and over the top of the ball, though contact on the opponent was with his trailing leg. "I think it's reckless," Gillett said of the challenge. "Even though you get a touch on the ball, it's still reckless. "The VAR, Stuart Attwell, decided to support the on-field call of a caution because there was "no secondary scissor action" and contact was "not with the studs". "I know the referee said yellow card but it was so high and hopefully maybe next time a red card, but it was a yellow," Jackson said after the game. "I nearly broke my leg, but anyway, it's part of football. "Webb says the on-field decision would have remained whether Gillett showed a yellow or a red card. Villa won the game 1-0 through a 36th-minute Johan Manzambi goal.

Redblacks set to name Morreale president - TSN

Mike Morreale is returning to the Canadian Football League. TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor reports the Ottawa Redblacks are set to name the former Canadian Elite Basketball League commissioner the team’s new president as soon as Wednesday. A 55-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont., Morreale stepped down as commissioner of the CEBL last fall after seven seasons in the role. He was also a co-founder of the league. A slotback in his playing days, Morreale appeared in 509 CFL games across 12 seasons with the Toronto Argonauts and his hometown Tiger-Cats from 1995 to 2006. He won Grey Cup titles in 1996 and 1999. In 1998, he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian after a season in which he recorded 1,076 receiving yards and six TDs for the Ticats. Following his retirement, Morreale joined the CFL Players’ Association, first as its director of marketing before becoming president in 2012. He served two years in the role. Morreale will succeed Adrian Sciarra, who stepped down as team president in August. Shawn Burke, the team’s vice-president of player operations, was fired a week later. The Redblacks are set to wrap up a dreadful season in which they started the year at 0-16.
