Hawaii braces for Hurricane Lowell amid risk of dangerous winds, flash floods - ABC News - Breaking News, Latest News and Videos

Hawaii officials urged residents and visitors to prepare for heavy rainfall and dangerous winds as Hurricane Lowell appeared set to barrel close to the islands of Kauai and Niihau. Lowell weakened to a Category 2 hurricane as of 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, with the storm expected to pass near the western part of the main Hawaiian islands between Monday night and Tuesday morning. The strongest impacts will likely be felt between 6 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday local time. The latest forecast has shifted the trajectory slightly to the East, meaning a greater likelihood of significant impacts for Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau. However, Lowell's strength as it passes the islands has trended slightly lower compared to 24 hours earlier. "Due to expected impacts from Hurricane Lowell, public schools on Kauaʻi, County of Kauaʻi offices, and State of Hawaiʻi offices on Kauaʻi will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 8," the Kauai Emergency Management Agency said in a statement late Monday. “Kauaʻi County is most vulnerable to Hurricane Lowell, and we are not going to take chances with people’s safety,” Governor Josh Green said in the statement.

St. Petersburg oil facilities ablaze as Ukraine launches more than 1,000 drones at Russia

Ukrainian strikes set an oil export terminal and a depot ablaze in St. Petersburg Sunday as Kyiv launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia in one of its largest aerial attacks of the war. The strikes came as tensions between Ukraine and Washington deepened, with President Trump criticizing Kyiv’s attacks on Russian oil infrastructure and the prospect of further US sanctions against Moscow still uncertain. One person was killed and five others were wounded in the St. Petersburg attack, which sparked fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the city’s Ruchi oil depot, local Governor Alexander Beglov said. A logistics center belonging to Russian retailer Ozon and a data center operated by Russian tech giant VK were also targeted, the companies confirmed. Russia’s Defense Ministry said Sunday that its forces had destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones over 15 Russian regions, the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, and the Black Sea. One Blood Type Seems to Carry a Higher Risk of Type 2 Diabetes - ScienceAlert

Depending on your blood type, it's possible you could carry a higher diabetes risk, research suggests. According to a 2024 review, people with blood type B – either positive or negative – face a slightly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people with non-B blood types. How much higher? About 28 percent, on average. That might not seem huge, but it may be significant enough to tip the scales if other risk factors are involved. "Numerous systematic reviews with meta-analyses have been published, which explored correlations between ABO and Rhesus blood groups with various health outcomes," wrote a team led by epidemiologist Fang-Hua Liu of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University. "However, to date, the association between these blood groups and human health outcomes remains controversial. The current umbrella review included 51 systematic reviews with meta-analysis articles with 270 associations. "We recalculated each association and found only one [instance of] convincing evidence for an association between blood group B and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk compared with the non-B blood group.

Congo’s fast-moving Ebola outbreak spreads to eighth province - CP24

Published: October 18, 2026 at 4:01p.m. EDTThe Ebola outbreak in Congo has spread to an eighth province in the country’s north, authorities said on Sunday. The Health Ministry has recorded two cases, including one death, in Nord-Ubangi province, bordering the Central African Republic. The ministry said both patients were men in their 20s living in the Wapinda health zone, which borders Bas-Uele province, where Ebola cases have been reported previously. Authorities have recorded at least 9,400 cases, including over 4,500 deaths, in the outbreak declared in mid-May, making it the deadliest in Congo’s history. The virus has spilled over into other countries including neighbouring Uganda, which has since declared itself free of the disease, and Kenya, which recorded a seventh case on Saturday. The Central African Republic has not recorded any confirmed cases. “We see pockets of Ebola generally going down, but unfortunately geographically it’s spreading out,” World Health Organization Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Yakub Janabi told The Associated Press in an interview in Beni, eastern Congo, on Friday.

Modern Cars Are Ditching The Dipstick: Here's Why

It's all dashboard lights and touchscreen warnings these days For decades, the vast majority of cars had a very simple tool to help owners properly maintain their car. That tool was a dipstick, and it enabled a quick, objective look at whether or not an engine or transmission had enough fluid inside for safe operation. Today, many cars don't offer that same simple tool to their owners. Instead, they offer digital displays that are often hidden deep in touchscreen menus. That can feel like a real step backward for DIY drivers. There is, however, a reason behind the change.

For co-founders Patrick Sullivan Jr. and Ashley Leroux Sullivan, both Republicans who embraced the marriage of MAHA and MAGA, Ledger is the exact type of wellness-minded regular they had in mind once they opened in 2025. Now, however, the couple find themselves part of a contingent of MAHA voters who are slipping from the Republican Party and searching for candidates who prioritize the movement. Get Starting PointA guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter EmailWhile it’s difficult to pinpoint the number of MAHA supporters who are pulling their support from the Republican Party, nearly 70 percent of rural supporters of the movement said the Trump administration’s policies have had an adverse effect or no impact on the health of people where they live, according to a KFF and Associated Press poll earlier this year focused on the midterms.
