Firefly is somewhat of a hub for Make America Healthy Again-minded patrons in the affluent, right-leaning, and health-conscious city of Scottsdale, attracting athleisure-wearing young people, stroller moms, entrepreneurs, and Bible study groups. For co-founders Patrick Sullivan Jr. and Ashley Leroux Sullivan, both Republicans who embraced the marriage of MAHA and MAGA, Ledger is the exact type of wellness-minded regular they had in mind once they opened in 2025. Now, however, the couple find themselves part of a contingent of MAHA voters who are slipping from the Republican Party and searching for candidates who prioritize the movement. Get Starting PointA guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter EmailWhile it’s difficult to pinpoint the number of MAHA supporters who are pulling their support from the Republican Party, nearly 70 percent of rural supporters of the movement said the Trump administration’s policies have had an adverse effect or no impact on the health of people where they live, according to a KFF and Associated Press poll earlier this year focused on the midterms.

Mass. GOP’s crash course in damage control
As Shawn Oliver’s arrest on drunken driving charges over the weekend threatened to disrupt the campaign’s closing message, Minogue on Sunday quickly called on the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor to suspend his campaign. It was a dramatic demand with just over two weeks until Election Day, and a rare public break between two candidates sharing a ticket. Within hours, Oliver did, saying the election was too important “to be overshadowed by personal matters.” The New Bedford City Councilor’s quick departure spared Minogue from a prolonged public rupture, even though Oliver’s name will remain next to his on voters’ Nov. 3 ballots. But it also marked only the latest snag for the Republican Party already struggling to regain relevance on Beacon Hill. The party earlier this year was still facing financial challenges despite vows to turn the page from years of debts. GOP candidates are fighting Trump-fueled headwinds in a state where the president remains deeply unpopular.

Shawn Oliver, GOP nominee for lieutenant governor, suspends campaign after OUI charge
“After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor,” Oliver said in a statement shared Sunday afternoon by a spokesperson for the state Republican Party. “This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”With early voting already underway and hundreds of thousands of people already having submitted their ballots by mail, Oliver’s name will remain on voters’ ballots alongside Minogue’s. Minogue said earlier Sunday that beyond calling on Oliver to end his campaign, he would “formally ask for his resignation” should both he and the New Bedford city councilor be elected Nov. 3. Minogue and Oliver were challenging Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, both first-term Democrats who have led the Republican nominees by a wide margin in public polling. A New Bedford police spokesperson said officers responded around 11:40 p.m.

CFB Wainwright training ‘as real as it can be,’ says retired major-general
Training at CFB Wainwright in Alberta is “as real as it can be” to prepare soldiers for combat operations, says a retired Canadian Armed Forces major-general. Four military members were killed, and dozens were injured after a fire broke out at the massive military base’s training area on Saturday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said at a press conference in Ottawa Sunday. Retired Maj.-Gen. David Fraser, who spent much of his over 30-year military career training at CFB Wainwright, said that training can involve up to thousands of people depending on the exercise. Some exercises are individual he said, providing an example of a member shooting a rifle at a gun range. Others are known as collective exercises, which involve two or more members, he said. “They’re progressive,” Fraser said in an interview Sunday. “You start off with one person and you end up at some stage in the game probably with 5,000 or 6,000 people,” he said.
