Ontario to allow over-the-counter hearing aids for sale in the province - CP24

Published: October 20, 2026 at 11:48a.m. EDTTORONTO — Ontario is planning to make over-the-counter hearing aids available in the province for people with mild hearing loss. The government says a legislative change set to be included in the fall economic update later this year will enable the devices to be used in Ontario. Health Minister Sylvia Jones says it will give Ontarians more choice and flexibility to get the hearing support they need, when and where they need it. Health Canada has issued medical device licences for some wireless earbuds that have built-in hearing aid capabilities, but Ontario law currently bans selling a hearing aid unless it is prescribed by a doctor or audiologist. Following an update to the law and some regulatory changes, manufacturers of in-ear headphones and earbuds with built-in hearing aid capabilities will be able to turn on these features in devices for sale in Ontario. The government says the new measure doesn’t replace or impact existing hearing aid prescriptions and coverage. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 20, 2026. łukasz twarkowski turns theater into a live cinematic spectacle

the polish director builds immersive stage environments in which live performance, moving images, and shifting scenography challenge how audiences experience theater. thomai tsimpou October 20, 2026 5 min prefer designboom on googleŁukasz Twarkowski merges theater and cinema onstageBefore Oracle begins at Onassis Stegi in Athens, a camera captures the audience and projects its image onto a screen. Spectators appear as grainy black-and-white figures, their faces transformed into a strange, almost anonymous collective portrait. Those who have come to watch find themselves becoming the spectacle. It is an introduction to the work of Polish director Łukasz Twarkowski, in which live performance and cinema become inseparable. Twarkowski brings theater and cinema into a shared space, making the process of filming part of the performance. The stage divides horizontally into two visual fields: the live theatrical action unfolds below, while a screen above displays footage captured by cameras operating within the set in real time. The audience watches the actors perform while simultaneously observing how their movements are framed and transformed into cinematic images.

James Moore: What Alberta’s ‘remain’ vote means for Mark Carney, Danielle Smith and the conservative movement

Published: October 20, 2026 at 7:44a.m. EDTJames Moore is a former federal cabinet minister under prime minister Stephen Harper and is a contributing columnist for CTVNews.ca. The referendum results in Alberta should mark a turning point for the relationship between not just Alberta and the government in Ottawa, but for Alberta and all of Canada. Canadians outside Alberta have watched and overwhelmingly hoped that the remain side would win. And, I think it is safe to say, that Canadians were both relieved and rejoiced to see that our fellow Canadians in Alberta stood up and stared down those who pushed for a separate Alberta. The process that led to this referendum was driven by Alberta separatists and enabled by a compliant provincial government hoping that a process to vent deep divisions publicly would result in some sort of catharsis that would heal divisions within Alberta’s conservative movement. It likely will not. Live results from the Alberta referendumThe soft separation question of the referendum, about whether to have a definitive referendum on separating from Canada, was overwhelmingly rejected by Albertans.

Perplexity Makes It Easier To Run AI Workflows Entirely On Your Own Mac - Engadget

You'll need a Mac with at least 36GB of RAM, however. At the start of September, Perplexity introduced Hybrid Compute, an update to its Computer app that gave users the option to split their AI workloads across a combination of frontier and local models running on their own machine. In hindsight, it was probably only a matter of time before the company made it possible for people to run the platform entirely on their own device, because that's exactly what it's doing now.

Gout Management and Outcomes Improve After Nephrology Referral - DocWireNews

Serum urate monitoring and urate-lowering therapy prescribing increased among patients with gout after their first nephrology visit, and gout-related outcomes improved during subsequent follow-up, according to a retrospective study being presented during American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Kidney Week 2026. Gout is common among patients with CKD, but managing the condition can be challenging in those with multiple comorbidities. Although most treatment of gout occurs in primary care settings, relatively little is known about changes in treatment patterns and outcomes after patients transition to nephrology care. To address this knowledge gap, investigators used the Optum Clinformatics Data Mart database to analyze insurance claims from 2,765 adults with gout who had an initial nephrology visit between 2016 and 2025. Patients were required to have continuous insurance enrollment for 1 year before and 2 years after their first nephrology visit. Changes in gout management and clinical outcomes were assessed in successive 6-month intervals. The study population had a mean age of 73 years. Most were men (64%) and had CKD (84%).

A new Beatles attraction is coming to Liverpool as interest in the Fab Four surges

LONDON (AP) — The birthplace of The Beatles is about to get even more of the Fab Four. Plans were announced Tuesday for a huge new visitor attraction that backers say will give Liverpool a tourist draw about its famous sons to rival Elvis Presley’s Graceland and Dolly Parton’s Dollywood. Apple Corps Ltd., the company that oversees The Beatles’ business interests, said an expanded version of The Beatles Story museum is coming to the center of Liverpool in 2028. It’s scheduled to open soon after the release of Sam Mendes’ quartet of feature films about John, Paul, George and Ringo, which are expected to unleash a new wave of global interest in the band that transformed rock ‘n’ roll. The plan will see Apple Corps take over The Beatles Story and move it from its current home in Liverpool’s docklands to the former St. John’s Market, a 100,000-square-foot (9,290-square-meter) site across from the city’s main Lime Street train station. Scientists discover a promising blood sugar–regulating compound in red alga - Phys.org

It is a dietary staple found in sushi, rice wraps and ramen toppings. Commonly known as nori in Japan and gim in Korea, red seaweed is especially popular across Asia. Yet, despite its widespread consumption, many of its nutritional benefits remain poorly understood. Now, research led by Hokkaido University scientists has discovered that digestion of a particular red alga releases a peptide, or a small fragment of protein, with potential benefits for blood glucose control and diabetes prevention. The study was published in Food Bioscience.
