Taunting Trump over gas prices, Iran braces for aftermath of US vote

A few days earlier, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, mocked a spike in U. S. Treasury bond rates. “We’ll return you to 1970s rates, plus high gas prices, diesel shortages and bell-bottoms. Enjoy the nostalgia!” he wrote. Iran’s leaders clearly relish the political damage Trump has suffered from the conflict he launched in late February, even as their own economy suffers extreme stress from U. S. sanctions and an American naval blockade. There are signs that political and economic pressure has pulled Trump back from the brink of military escalation, and the election result could determine what steps the United States takes next. “They’re desperate to try and affect the election, so that we can get a nice weak group of people in there, and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters last month. Memorial bicycle sculpture installed along Etobicoke bike lanes; rally planned Tuesday

A sculpture dedicated to cyclists who have lost their lives on Toronto’s streets was erected near Bloor Street West and Islington Avenue Monday night, while work crews continue dismantling bike lanes in Etobicoke even as cycling advocates have tried to slow down their progress at every step. The installation features a number of bicycles painted red stacked on top of each other against a hydro pole in a pyramid-like shape, with a lone bicycle nailed to the pole above the rest of the sculpture. Plastic skulls and flowers hang off the bikes and a sign attached to the pole reads, “This sculpture was built to honour the lives lost on Bloor, Yonge + University during the 20 year fight for safe streets.”
