Scientists discover a promising blood sugar–regulating compound in red alga - Phys.org

It is a dietary staple found in sushi, rice wraps and ramen toppings. Commonly known as nori in Japan and gim in Korea, red seaweed is especially popular across Asia. Yet, despite its widespread consumption, many of its nutritional benefits remain poorly understood. Now, research led by Hokkaido University scientists has discovered that digestion of a particular red alga releases a peptide, or a small fragment of protein, with potential benefits for blood glucose control and diabetes prevention. The study was published in Food Bioscience.

I Brought My 325k-Mile Range Rover To The Dealer And Oh My God It’s So Much Worse Than I Expected

When you buy a used car, especially one well out of warranty and advanced in age, it’s generally accepted that a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is highly recommended. When buying a 20-year-old Land Rover product, that recommendation should be seen more as a requirement than a mere suggestion. Despite this, when I purchased my 321k-mile 2006 Range Rover back in March, my haste to get behind the wheel relegated conventional wisdom to the back seat. After six months and nearly four thousand miles, I’ve grown confident in my Tonga Green bucket of magnificence despite its existing and mounting flaws. Still, I figured it was finally time to open up the metaphorical closet to see what skeletons may be lurking inside. To satisfy my curiosity, and to build a roadmap for what my L322 will need to propel it past the 400k-mile goalposts, I called my local Land Rover dealers to schedule an inspection. While I was fully prepared for a mahoosive list, nothing could have prepared me for a bill that would not only put Caleb Hammer in the grave but have him rolling over in it.

Defense attorney Josh Tomsheck told jurors at trial in a Nevada court that the man deeply regretted the “bad decisions” he made while intoxicated. After about five hours of deliberations, jurors returned convictions on felony and misdemeanour animal cruelty counts against the Ontario, Canada, man. Don’t hibernate: How to get outside in Alaska safely after snowfall - Alaska's News Source

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Mid-October marks a seasonal shift in Anchorage, with snow appearing on nearby mountains and daylight hours shrinking. A local hiking guide and a cardiologist are offering guidance on how to stay active outdoors safely as conditions change. Conditions change quickly Dylan Gillespie, Alaska Guided Hikes owner, said the shift from summer to winter conditions happens fast. Gillespie said trails become more slippery and snow accumulates quickly on peaks above Anchorage. “It’s important to be aware that avalanches can be a factor here, so definitely do your research before you head out on the trail,” Gillespie said. “Even on a popular hike like Flat Top, avalanches can happen, so be sure to check beforehand.” Gillespie said he once fell through ice while hiking on a glacier at age 16. “We looked down and saw it was about a 30 feet drop, so that is a great example of what not to do,” Gillespie said. Gillespie now packs for worst-case conditions. “Be more prepared than you think you need to be,” Gillespie said.

Bethesda Reveals What's Coming Next to Fallout 4 With First-Look at a Trio of New Mods

Updated: Oct 20, 2026 3:36pm UTCBethesda has put its weight behind a trio of new Fallout 4 mods as part of the ongoing Fallout Day celebrations. The Verified Creations label sees Bethesda support modders in an official capacity as they build upon the now 11-year-old post-apocalyptic role-playing game. First up we have FEVer Dreams, from Kinggath Creations, which comes out today, October 20. It’s a free escape room-style dungeon that “inundates players with hallucinations and flashbacks, including conversations with their spouse.” What’s interesting here is FEVer Dreams features the voice of Courtenay Taylor, who played the female sole Survivor in Fallout 4, and Brian T. Delaney, who played the male Sole Survivor in Fallout 4. That’s pretty impressive for a mod! Meanwhile, Command Override, from Hobgoblin Studios, lets players see through a robot’s eyes and pilot it remotely. It includes a new robot hacking ability, a Robco headquarters dungeon, and — in a first for Verified Creators — a live action trailer. Command Override launches for Fallout 4 on October 21.

Judi Dench graciously claims there to be "no villains in the making of Cats" - A.V. Club

We live in a completely different world than that of December 2019, and not just because of political, medical, and climate crises. That month brought Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats, and many have never recovered. Count Dame Judi Dench among them, who writes in her upcoming memoir, Is It Too Late To Make A Run For It?, “Oh God, I can’t bear it.” This is per The Guardian, which reports that Dench calls the universally-panned film “a waste of all that goodwill and talent.” Dench has spoken about the film before, and still hasn’t been able to bring herself to watch the finished (if you can call it that) product, but now she’s magnanimous toward everyone who worked on it. “I understand the critics were rather hostile to the film. I never saw the final cut so I can’t judge,” she writes. “All I’ll say is nobody sets out to give a poor performance or make a bad film.

A Magnetar Can Be Born When Two Neutron Stars Touch - Universe Today

All neutron stars have intense magnetic fields. The typical magnetic field of a neutron star is about 100,000 times stronger than the strongest magnetic fields we can create on Earth. But about 1% of neutron stars have even stronger magnetic fields. Known as magnetars, their magnetic fields can be 1,000 times stronger than a regular magnetic field. They are a likely cause for powerful transient events such as soft gamma-ray repeaters and fast radio bursts. A new study looks at how magnetars might form. The work focuses on the mergers of binary neutron stars. Often when two neutron stars collide they form a black hole. This is because the combined mass of the two neutron stars is greater than the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) limit, which is around 2.6 solar masses. Most neutron stars are more massive than white dwarfs, which have a Chandrasekhar limit of about 1.4 solar masses. But some neutron stars have smaller masses. If they happen to have a total mass less than the TOV limit, then they can merge and become a single neutron star.

Mate Rimac Says He Considered Tesla Roadster-Style Thrusters Years Ago

Tesla catalyzed an internet frenzy last week after its long-awaited Roadster was revealed packing a cold-gas thruster setup and a fan suction system, enabling the EV to drive upside down and even achieve momentary flight. But as novel as the idea of a thruster-packed hypercar might seem, Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac recently said the technology has been on his mind for years. In an Instagram post reacting to the Tesla Roadster reveal, Rimac said he was fixated on static downforce systems like the one on Tesla’s Roadster and the McMurtry Spéirling back in 2019. Rimac then showed an email from 2019 titled “Static downforce,” in which he was exploring a fan-based downforce system inspired by the Brabham BT46B F1 car. The 1978 racecar featured a large, engine-driven fan at the rear that sucked air from under the chassis, but the team claimed the fan’s primary purpose was engine cooling. Tesla“Flying cars, cold thrusters, finally, huh? Lots of people ask us if we ever considered something like that, and you would be surprised. The answer is actually yes,” Rimac said in the social media video, which was reposted by the account Entrelligence and brought to broader attention by CarBuzz.

Quality, reliability, and content coverage of pleural effusion–related short videos on Douyin (TikTok) and Bilibili: a cross-sectional study - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractPleural effusion is a common clinical finding with heterogeneous causes, including infection, malignancy, heart failure, tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism and systemic disease. Because patients often encounter pleural effusion as an imaging finding rather than as a diagnosis, short-video platforms may shape early understanding, anxiety and care-seeking behaviour. Evidence on the quality of this content is lacking. We conducted a cross-sectional content analysis of publicly available pleural effusion–related short videos on Douyin and Bilibili. The Mandarin search term “胸腔积液” (pleural effusion) was entered on 15 May 2026 and the first 150 results returned under each platform’s default ranking were screened.

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of liposomes constructed with Rg3 as a cholesterol substitute for tumor therapy - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractConventional cholesterol liposomes have poor stability, rapid clearance, and toxicity. This study used Rg3 to replace cholesterol for constructing curcumin-loaded liposomes (PCRL) and evaluated their potential for enhanced hepatocellular carcinoma therapy. Curcumin-loaded liposomes were prepared with Rg3 (PCRL) and cholesterol (PCCL) via thin-film hydration. Physicochemical properties, protein corona, in vitro behavior, in vivo tumor targeting, antitumor efficacy, and biosafety were assessed in H22 tumor-bearing mice. PCRL exhibited smaller particle size, superior storage/plasma stability, and comparable membrane packing to PCCL. Protein corona analysis showed reduced adsorption of immunoglobulin-like and complement proteins, prolonging blood circulation > 24 h and enhancing tumor accumulation.
