Experts tested whales’ teeth for nuclear fallout – and accidentally found the oldest killer whale on record - BBC Wildlife Magazine

By analysing the teeth of five whales who died on Scottish shores in the past three decades, researchers created a ‘dental time machine’ – allowing them to reconstruct the life stories of the animals and identify one of the oldest male killer whales on record. "Its teeth are serrated – like a steak knife. This lets them easily tear their prey into bitesize chunks… " 9 deadliest, sharpest teeth on the planet

10 NES Games That Are Still Worth Playing From Start to Finish

On Oct. 18, 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America alongside a limited selection of games like Super Mario Bros. and Excitebike. Within a few years, it had a library of hundreds of titles, proving that rumors of the video game industry’s death throughout the early ‘80s were greatly exaggerated. Today, many of those early games feel like antiques. They’re not nearly as memorable as they once were, with so many generations of newer software to choose from. But there are some that still deserve your attention, even now. Here are 10 NES games that are still worth playing from start to finish. Publisher: Tecmo Ninja warriors clashed in a contemporary city, and players immediately knew they wanted to spend more time with agile hero Ryu Hayabusa. The cost was steep. Ninja Gaiden is one of the most challenging games of the era, at least out of the ones a person might still care to play today. Bosses hit hard and fast. Even birds have what it takes to knock an unwitting ninja from the tenuous safety a small ledge provides. The game inspired two sequels, which proved similarly compelling.

The National Hurricane Center is now highlighting this area for potential tropical development, with a 30% chance over the next seven days. WHAT IS A NOR’EASTER? Regardless of tropical development, the Outer Banks are expected to see long-term impacts, including intense wind gusts from the approaching nor’easter, while the storm sits off the coast. The main concern for the Outer Banks region will be intense wind gusts as strong as 40 to 60 mph, fueling moderate coastal flooding and destructive waves. A mandatory evacuation for locals on Hatteras Island is in effect, as storm conditions are expected to worsen, with the potential for significant ocean overwash. This graphic shows the Wind Alerts for the upcoming Nor’easter.(FOX Weather) According to the FOX Forecast Center, the impacts will last through late Wednesday evening and into Thursday, totaling three days of nasty storms with ferocious wind gusts.

Projected prevalence of hypertension and untreated/uncontrolled hypertension in Japan through 2040 - Nature

IntroductionHypertension is a major global health concern and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality [1]. It is estimated that more than 19 million annual deaths are attributed to cardiovascular disease (CVD) worldwide [2]. In Japan, high blood pressure (BP) has been consistently identified as a strong risk factor for the national burden of CVD, in terms of notable incidence, mortality, direct/indirect healthcare costs, and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) associated with this condition [3, 4]. Although age-specific mean BP declined in Japan over recent decades [5], hypertension remains a critical public health issue, particularly because of the rapid aging population. The proportion of individuals aged ≥65 years is projected to reach approximately 35% by 2040 in Japan [6], highlighting a potentially higher future burden of hypertension in this country. While the prevalence of hypertension increases with age, population aging may offset the benefits of declining BP levels in each age group. As a result, the future burden of hypertension in Japan remains uncertain.

Kings' Simmons suffers torn Achilles amid NBA comeback - theScore

Sacramento Kings veteran Ben Simmons sustained a torn right Achilles tendon during a drill in practice Sunday, the team announced. Simmons, who hadn't played in the NBA since April 2025, signed a one-year deal with Sacramento in September. He was reportedly expected to start in Wednesday's season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers after a pair of encouraging preseason appearances. The 30-year-old released a statement on social media in which he denied the injury would be "the end of my story. " I've faced challenges before that tested me mentally, physically, and emotionally, and I've found a way through every single one of them. The injury is another chapter in my journey, not the end of my story.

9 Best DLCs That Were Even Better Than the Base Game

When you pick up downloadable content for a game, generally, you’re expecting more of the same experience: a few extra hours, some new gear, perhaps a boss fight the base game didn’t have room for. What if, instead of new outfits and a handful of fetch quests, a DLC decided to crown you the new god of madness? What if it dropped you into hell to stop a president’s wedding, or handed the entire story over to a teenager narrating her own homebrew Dungeons & Dragons campaign (complete with a dragon she very clearly made up five minutes ago)? Even the wildest DLC needs a solid game to swerve away from, or the swerve doesn’t land. Every base game with excellent DLC is strong enough to stand on its own. That’s the common DNA: studios that had built something sturdy enough to trust it, confident enough to hand players a portal to hell, an alien hive-mind under a suburban cul-de-sac, or a crown that makes you ruler of an entire realm of madness — and bet that players would play anyway. For these nine DLCs, that confidence turned out to be well-placed.

NHCS launches centre to advance cardiovascular research for Asian patients - Healthcare Asia Magazine

It also established a $2.5m professorship to support its cardiothoracic surgery leadership. The National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) has launched a centre to develop cardiovascular disease models using heart cells derived from Asian patients. The Centre for Integrative Human Cell Research and Translation (CIPHER), launched on 16 October, uses blood samples from Asian patients to grow heart muscle cells for disease research and drug testing. It is the first centre in Singapore dedicated to cardiovascular research using this approach. NHCS also announced the establishment of the Tong Ming Chuan Professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery, the first professorship in the field under the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC). CIPHER aims to address gaps in cardiovascular research, as some heart conditions develop earlier and present differently in Asian populations than in Western populations. Many treatments have historically been developed using models that do not fully reflect Asian biology. The centre uses blood samples to generate induced pluripotent stem cells, which are developed into heart muscle cells carrying features of each patient’s disease.

Pair-density waves found in uranium ditelluride beyond superconductivity — ScienceAlert - UA.NEWS

A research group led by scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has found compelling evidence of pair-density waves on the surface of uranium ditelluride. These structures persisted at temperatures higher than the superconducting transition temperature, ScienceAlert reports. The results were published in the journal PNAS. Electron pairs form patternsIn the superconducting state, electrons can form Cooper pairs and move through a material without electrical resistance or energy loss through heating. The existence of pair-density waves, or PDWs, was theoretically predicted as early as 2007. In this state, Cooper pairs form spatially repeating patterns resembling waves in sand. Uranium ditelluride enters a superconducting state at temperatures below approximately 2.1 kelvin, or about minus 271 degrees Celsius. The material also interests physicists as a possible rare spin-triplet superconductor: in such a system, paired electrons also have a small magnetic orientation. More current news is available on the UA. News Telegram channel Telegram. Observations of magnetic field and temperatureSigns of PDW had previously been recorded in uranium ditelluride.

First Alert Forecast: Gusty trades start the work week - Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Moderate to locally windy trades will blow over the islands for the next several days. Showers will generally be on the light side and focus mainly on windward and mauka areas, but some showers may be pushed leeward by the strong trades through midweek. There’s a First Alert for lighter winds and a possible weak front that could impact our weather starting Thursday into the weekend. The gusty trades may ease up and come from the southeast as a low pressure area drops in from the northwest. If the low moves far enough south, it could push a front through the state Sunday into Monday. Still too early to tell for sure, but we’ll keep you posted. View the latest weather conditions here. In surf, a north-northwest swell and a small overlapping swell from the west-northwest are both on the way down. Surf on south shores will decline below average Monday and remain small through most of the week. Rough surf generated by the trade winds will continue through midweek for east shores, then decline as the trades ease later in the week.

Aston Martin, Range Rover, And Maserati SUVs Now Sell For Loaded Highlander Money

Dan Clougher is an automotive journalist and former classic and sports car dealer with hands-on experience across luxury, performance, and collector vehicles. Before joining CarBuzz, he managed his own showroom and worked with both independent and franchise dealers, specializing in classic and high-end models. Since 2023, Dan has contributed to HotCars and CarBuzz, producing news coverage, buyer’s guides, and in-depth features on classic and modern cars. His work draws on a practical understanding of the used and collector car markets, with a focus on value, rarity, and historical significance. High depreciation in the luxury segment is nothing new, and in fact, it's something we've covered here plenty of times in the past at CarBuzz. However, while there certainly is plenty to celebrate about a $40,000 luxury sedan now selling for $12,000, or tanking EV prices, this piece zeroes in on some of the biggest losers when it comes to plummeting values. Fully loaded SUVs from some of the most prestigious automakers are, on paper, properly desirable cars.
