B.C. Conservatives platform promises $2.6 B in growth, $10.8B deficit

The British Columbia Conservatives say their election platform amounts to restraint, not austerity, and will create $2.6 billion in new revenue over three years, while shrinking the deficit to $10.8 billion by 2030. The document released Sunday, with related costs, says that if Gross Domestic Product grows by 2.5 per cent in 2027, 2.8 per cent in 2028, and 3.2 per cent in 2029, the province will collect an additional $2.62 billion, compared with the NDP’s own forecast.

GTA 6: Can you cheat on someone with a video game character? - BBC

Image source, Rockstar gamesImage caption, The relationship between the two main characters, Jason and Lucia, is at the centre of Rockstar's latest Grand Theft Auto titleByJim ReedHealth reporterImagine your partner spending hours flirting with someone else, trying to hold their hand and taking them on dates. Most people would have questions. But what if that someone only exists inside a video game? The latest instalment in Rockstar's blockbuster Grand Theft Auto franchise is set to be the biggest entertainment launch of the year when it is released next month. Judging by previews, the connection between its two main characters is a central feature. Rockstar has hinted that the Bonnie and Clyde-type protagonists Jason and Lucia do not have to become a full-on romantic couple. But their relationship can grow by spending time together outside of the main crime and life-on-the-run storyline – through shopping, visiting bars and restaurants and working out together. Smaller interactions like holding hands and quickly responding to each other's texts can help build a bond.

Inside the shadowy world of anti-Putin sabotage from within Russia - BBC

Site search54 minutes agoMonica GarnseyBBC Eye Two Russian men secretly working for Ukraine's intelligence services have given rare accounts of operations they claim to have been involved with, that have targeted military assets and personnel inside Russia. One of the men, whom we are calling Ivan, claims to have played a role from Russia in Ukrainian drone attacks on strategic bombers and munitions factories on his home soil. He features in a BBC World Service documentary about the shadowy world of Russian saboteurs. The documentary, by independent Polish journalist Marcin Mamon, also features a man we are calling Foma, a Russian living in exile in Poland. Foma runs a network of undercover volunteers in Russia, that surveils high-level officers that the GUR - Ukraine's military intelligence service - is considering targeting, he says. He stresses they are never involved in the attacks themselves. Fire risk was low before sudden wind shift sparked deadly base fire: CAF memo

An internal Canadian Armed Forces memo says the fire index was low for a scheduled live-ammunition training exercise Saturday at a base near Wainwright, Alberta, when an “unexpected and sudden wind change” sparked a runaway grass fire that killed four soldiers and seriously injured dozens more. “During training, a grass fire ignited, and strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly and shift direction; the fire shifted toward the personnel on the range and overtook their admin area,” the memo states. Earlier on Saturday, Environment Canada had issued a high-wind warning for Alberta. Gusts of up to 100 km/h in some parts of the province tipped over semi-trailer trucks and toppled trees. Issued Sunday by the Strategic Joint Staff (SJS) and obtained by Global News, the memo also said the fire jumped a fire guard and spread outside the base, forcing the evacuation of one family home. The fire has been contained but is still burning. Story continues below advertisement

And it came against a field that included the US boat that was fifth at the global regatta, two-time defending champion Cambridge and national collegiate titlist Washington. But the biggest challenger turned out to be the Crimson, who just missed winning the event for the first time since 2011. “I don’t think we had a lot of expectation,” said stroke Sam Gallaudet, whose seatmates included only two holdovers from last year’s varsity. “We were all coming in wanting to see what we could do.

Video posted to social media shows a shark swimming close to shore. Monday, October 19, 2026 12:04AMMANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A surfer in Manhattan Beach caught more than just waves recently. Video posted to social media shows a shark swimming close to shore. Its dorsal fin is clearly visible as it glides through the water. It's unclear what type of shark was spotted, but the surfer who captured the video on Friday says it's the first one he's ever seen in Manhattan Beach. Several shark species are commonly found in local waters, including juvenile great white sharks. Experts say warmer waters from this season's El Niño are attracting unusual sea creatures across the Southern California coast. Two historic sea turtle nests discovered in Southern California have been confirmed to belong to two different endangered olive ridley sea turtles. Two rare olive ridley sea turtle nests were recently discovered in Southern California -- the first time the species has ever been documented on the West Coast.

Tiny worm brains reveal surprising sex differences beyond neural wiring - Interesting Engineering

With 302 neurons, 200 of them in their heads, hermaphrodite female roundworms reveal surprising sex-specific differences in the nervous system and how these differences influence behavior, reproduction, and aging. Researchers at Northeastern University compared brain activity in male and hermaphroditic Caenorhabditis elegans, a microscopic worm widely used in biological research to understand how sex wires males and female nervous systems differently.

A robot will deliver your food, if it doesn’t get smashed first

Gonzalez, 28, sent the robot on its way and headed to a movie, where he told friends about the rescue. But three hours later, there it was again on a new corner: the same droid, taking a beating from the Adidas-clad foot of a tottering pedestrian. Gonzalez tried to stop the perpetrator. But the man crouched to look the robot straight in its LED eyes. “You suck,” he said — and delivered a final kick to its midsection. In American cities big and small, legions of similar machines are carting around takeout orders of sushi, pizza, and White Castle chicken rings and testing the question of whether humans and robots can coexist. A Saline Injection Could Offer Longer Relief From Carpal Tunnel Pain - ScienceAlert

Typing with numb fingers, struggling to hold a pen, or waking with an aching hand can make everyday life exhausting for people with carpal tunnel syndrome. The condition develops when a nerve supplying the hand becomes squeezed inside a narrow passage at the wrist. Pressure can disrupt the nerve's signals, causing pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness. Now, a small trial has found that injecting saline around the trapped nerve could ease symptoms for longer than a steroid injection. Relief persisted for six months after the saline procedure, by which time the initial benefits of steroid injection alone had largely faded. Ultrasound guides needle placement during hydrodissection for carpal tunnel syndrome. (Bose et al., Radiology, 2026/RSNA)The saline is used to open up space between tissues. In the procedure, called hydrodissection, a clinician uses ultrasound to guide a fine needle alongside the nerve. The sterile salt solution is injected around it, separating it from tissues that restrict its movement. This aims to help the nerve move more freely. A steroid injection eases symptoms by reducing inflammation and swelling.

Canada needs more permanent solutions to its housing problem

Open this photo in gallery:Carpenters build new homes in Ottawa in June. Canada's housing industry is calling for changes to taxes and development charges to lower construction costs and improve affordability. Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian PressBrad Carr is the chief executive of Mattamy Homes. Earlier this year, Ontario and the federal government announced an HST rebate for all new homes in Ontario, a move that helped make homes more affordable for buyers and kept workers building through what otherwise could have been an even more disastrous slowdown. Important work between municipal, provincial and federal governments has also started to reduce development charges, the hidden taxes and fees on many new homes. The HST rebate’s impact was immediately visible in key sectors of the market, buyers returned to low-rise sales centres across the province and second quarter sector-wide sales increased 130 per cent year over year. Canadian home sales forecast for 2026 downgraded again by CREAThese new housing measures demonstrate important progress, but a healthy home building sector and affordability require much more.
