NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Republican candidate for lieutenant governor Shawn Oliver suspended his campaign after he was arrested Saturday night on an OUI charge following a wild crash in New Bedford. Oliver was running alongside Mike Minogue, who is challenging incumbent Gov. Maura Healey in the Massachusetts gubernatorial race. “After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor. This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters,” he said. “I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”“The MassGOP supports the decision of Shawn Oliver to suspend his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Lives were put at risk, and that is never acceptable. We now stand to assist Shawn in getting any help he needs to ensure he never puts himself or others in harm’s way again,” said Massachusetts Republican Party Chairwoman Amy Carnevale.

Former GOP nominee for lieutenant governor pleads not guilty to charges of drunk driving, speeding

Police said he was unable to perform field sobriety tests due to his injuries and vomited before he was placed under arrest, records show. A police report filed in court said officers arrived at the crash to find Oliver’s Lincoln Navigator overturned. Oliver ”was sitting on a chair that a civilian had brought out for him,” the report said. “Shawn was observed to have a laceration on the right side of his head and was bleeding.”Police also spotted a badly damaged gray Camry and an extensively damaged red Camry. The latter vehicle “was pushed back, causing it to collide into another parked vehicle,” police said. “In total, 5 parked vehicles were involved.”One witness, police said, described being behind Oliver’s Navigator at a red light before the crash. “The witness stated that when the light turned green, the Navigator remained stopped, he then had to put his car in reverse in order to see if the light was green,” police said.

Shawn Oliver, GOP nominee for lieutenant governor, suspends campaign after OUI charge

“After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor,” Oliver said in a statement shared Sunday afternoon by a spokesperson for the state Republican Party. “This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”With early voting already underway and hundreds of thousands of people already having submitted their ballots by mail, Oliver’s name will remain on voters’ ballots alongside Minogue’s. Minogue said earlier Sunday that beyond calling on Oliver to end his campaign, he would “formally ask for his resignation” should both he and the New Bedford city councilor be elected Nov. 3. Minogue and Oliver were challenging Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, both first-term Democrats who have led the Republican nominees by a wide margin in public polling. A New Bedford police spokesperson said officers responded around 11:40 p.m.

A candidate for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, Republican Shawn Oliver, was arrested on drunken driving charges after a crash late Saturday that left several parked vehicles damaged and his own overturned, police said. On Sunday, Oliver, a New Bedford City Council member, announced he was suspending his campaign, as his running mate, Mike Minogue, had called for him to do. “After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor,” Oliver said in a statement. “This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”He faces charges of operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding, New Bedford police said Sunday. They said Oliver’s vehicle overturned after it hit five parked vehicles, two of which were extensively damaged, near a shopping plaza on Dartmouth Street about 11:40 p.m. Oliver was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital to be treated and was later arrested.

Lieutenant governor candidates split on working with Trump as ICE, affordability dominate

Attention stayed on President Trump during the first and only lieutenant governor debate Tuesday, closely following the contours of the showdown between Gov. Maura Healey and Republican challenger Mike Minogue last week. Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll faced Republican Shawn Oliver, a New Bedford city councilor who is running on the ticket with Minogue against Healey and Driscoll, live on GBH's "Boston Public Radio" Tuesday morning. Like her running partner, Driscoll pointed to "headwinds" from Washington, D. C., on questions of affordability and immigration, while Oliver said the sitting administration's refusal to work with the president has hurt Massachusetts. The debate began with the topic that's shaping up to define elections across the country this November: affordability. Minogue and Oliver have said they would stop "overspending" and "overtaxing. " When asked what programs they would cut in the budget to do so, Oliver repeated a Minogue campaign talking point that the savings would come from reducing waste and fraud. "When you talk about overspending, overtaxing, we go right to cutting to make things more affordable," Oliver said.
