Description

After keeping the 74-year-old in captivity for four years, Russia has freed U.S. citizen Stephen Hubbard from captivity in Moscow. The release came Wednesday, directly after a visit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg – at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a series of actions meant to benefit Moscow. Hubbard, a retired schoolteacher from Michigan, was put in detention and sentenced to seven years imprisonment on charges of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine back in 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of that country. In January 2025, Washington designated Hubbard as wrongfully detained, enabling the U.S. government to pursue negotiations for his release. “Welcome home Stephen, it’s great to have you back,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Wednesday.
