Description

Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Ankara on Thursday and said Canada is forming a “strategic partnership” with Turkey to secure a free trade agreement. Carney arrived in Ankara overnight for the first official bilateral visit by a Canadian prime minister to Turkey. In a joint statement, Carney and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said they're also looking to ratify an “air transportation agreement,” which could lead to more direct flights. The prime minister confirmed that negotiators from the two countries would meet in Ankara next month for the first round of free trade talks. “Our goal is not self-sufficiency; it is collective resilience. And that's why Canada is building deeper partnerships with reliable partners that create new opportunities for us both. And in Turkey, we have an exceptional partner,” Carney said.
