Description
Toronto Crime Stoppers has paused tip intake after a cybersecurity breach potentially exposed identifying information included in some submissions. The organization is asking people not to submit tips while work happens to establish safer reporting options. Anyone facing an immediate emergency should call 911. Officials reported more than 176,000 Toronto Crime Stoppers tips were affected by a breach involving its software provider. Tech Analyst Carmi Levi weighed in on the breach saying, "The crime stoppers brand as we know it is essentially dead." "This is catastrophic, if you called in information on any crime at all and you assume that information would be held confidential that has now been blown up," Levy added. Sean O'Shea reports.
