The federal government says it will invest up to $254 million to upgrade New Brunswick’s biggest ocean port: Port Saint John. Joined by New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt, federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon made the announcement Wednesday, revealing the funding will go towards a series of infrastructure improvements aimed at unlocking Port Saint John’s potential – including the development of a new facility where border services can examine cargo, expanded railway tracks, and the dredging of the port’s main channel to allow for larger container and cruise ships. “I've never been more optimistic about our future… We're already on track to double our non-U.S. Exports In the next 10 years. This country has what the world wants,” MacKinnon said, highlighting Canada’s push to reduce reliance on the U.S. amid the ongoing trade war. Holt, also enthused about the “historic project” and what it could entail for the province’s economy, announced an additional $116.5 million investment from her government.
