Description

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to address the nation, a day after one of the worst unrests in the country. Police have arrested around 1,800 people after mostly peaceful student-led rallies devolved into clashes. More than half a million people reportedly took to the streets across the country on Oct 17. Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds. Some protesters hurled projectiles, set fires to block roads and destroyed tram shelters. Masked groups also smashed shop windows and looted businesses, including in Paris and Lille. Ross Cullen reports from Paris.
