Orange Line trains now running faster north of North Station, MBTA says

Orange Line riders will experience faster speeds between Assembly Station and North Station starting Sunday, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced. Trains running along the line north of North Station can now reach speeds of up to 55 miles per hour. The latest upgrade comes just over a year after similar speed increases were implemented on the Orange Line between Oak Grove Station in Malden and Assembly in Somerville. “Today we are proud to deliver improvements that will make travel even more efficient giving riders back more time in their days,” Phil Eng, general manager of the MBTA and interim transportation secretary, said in a statement. Eng said people who use the Orange Line should expect to experience 76 percent more service every weekday compared to winter in 2023. For many years, the top speed across the entire network was 40 miles per hour. In 2024, the T completed a track improvement program, in which miles of degraded track and ties were replaced, and many speed restrictions were eliminated. The transit agency also upgraded signal systems and replaced old train cars.

Apple’s HomeViews Reportedly Collected Dust in Warehouses ‘For the Better Part of a Year’ - Gizmodo

Your new Apple HomeView, huggable as it may be, will already be old when it’s finally in your hands next month. The oldness is etched right into the throwback design, some of which, yes, is Apple Watch-like, or an intentional wink at classic and beloved Apple gear from ancient history like the iMac G4. But its proportions and thick black bezel prematurely age it in a less retro-cool way too, calling to mind the iPads of eight years ago. And the guts are rapidly aging as well. Its A18 iPhone processor was cutting-edge two years ago, and its paltry memory offering of 8 gigs marks this as a device meant to be sold to the consumers of the past—because that’s exactly what it is, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman’s earlier columns asserted the development of an Apple smart home device with a screen long, long ago—a “low-end iPad,” he wrote with laser accuracy all the way back in 2023. But along the way, his sources apparently fed him stories about a problem that squeezed the product pipeline nearly to death: AI-powered Siri sucked for years before Apple finally got it to work. As Gurman reported in March, the embryonic product destined to become the HomeView had to be

Notification Lights On Google Pixel Phones Are Leaving Users Unimpressed - BGR

The Google Pixel 11 Pro HiLight presents itself with a sleek design and unique feature — the ability to light up certain colors while face down to indicate a favorite contact is calling you, or to ensure Gemini is listening when you make a verbal request. The HiLight LED later received a cool new feature which tacked on messages as an additional trigger for its light indicator, although this is still only available on the beta channel. However, it seems the feature doesn't entirely live up to the promise of its premise and has left some hopeful owners rather disappointed. A major complaint among HiLight owners is that the device offers a limited color selection for them to assign to their contacts. The device was initially held back by a meager five color choices. Although outlets like Android Authority provided some hope with news of future updates introducing more options, some HiLight users pointed out that, though it has the hardware capabilities to support them now, Google is seemingly rolling out new color options at a sluggish pace, rather than making them available all at once. "Drip feeding new colors as a feature is absolutely insane," another Redditor wrote.

Crews battle fire at vacant Colorado Springs building, no one hurt - KOAA News 5

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — No injuries were reported in a fire at a vacant building in Colorado Springs Sunday morning, officials say. The fire department says fire crews responded around 10:15 a.m. to E. Platte Avenue near Iowa Avenue after receiving multiple 911 calls about smoke coming from a building. A drone from the Real Time Crime Center was deployed and arrived within two minutes to help firefighters assess the fire before they got there. Firefighters requested more crews to help. Firefighters went inside but pulled out when the roof started collapsing. They say about two-thirds of the roof collapsed. Some exterior walls also collapsed onto trees and vacant cottages nearby. The buildings involved were all vacant and boarded up, and no one has been reported injured. The fire was in a building near The Black Sheep music venue, but officials said it was not damaged. E. Platte Avenue shut down in both directions between Swope Avenue and E. Boulder Street. People were asked to avoid the area while crews investigate at the scene. The closure is expected to last about a few hours into the afternoon. It's unclear at this time what caused the fire.

Dance Is Not for Us review – desire and defiance as one revolutionary mover sweats it all out

In August 2019, Omar Rajeh sat in his bedroom, listening to the sound of pounding percussion with his world in crisis. In the midst of political instability, Citerne Beirut, a theatre and cultural centre Rajeh had founded in his native Lebanon, was forced to close, dismantled by order of the local government, who planned to build an incinerator on the site. Heartfelt … Omar Rajeh in Dance Is Not for Us. Photograph: Tristram Kenton/the GuardianRajeh tells us that as a teenager, coming of age at the end of the Lebanese civil war, dance had always seemed like the most revolutionary thing he could do. Now here he is, more than three decades later, still dancing – out of frustration, defiance, resistance and a desire to connect. As the percussive score gains momentum, Rajeh’s busy body builds up a sweat. In this danced stream of consciousness, Rajeh is not always an especially elegant mover, but he dances like it’s a necessary thing to do. Part of this year’s Dance Umbrella festival, Dance Is Not for Us is a solo that appears at times like an explosion of physical instinct, but it is mostly calm, considered musings on the nature of choreography, with all its workings exposed.

CFB Wainwright fire sparked by live training exercise, causes explosion: sources

A preliminary investigation into the deadly fire at CFB Wainwright suggests a munition from a live training exercise sparked a fast-moving grass fire, causing Saturday’s explosion, according to multiple military sources. Separate military sources told Global News that at least seven people died in the incident, and dozens more were injured at the base, located around 200 kilometres from Edmonton. On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that four service members perished and their next of kin have been notified, adding that dozens more were seriously injured. “Yesterday afternoon, a violent fast-moving fire swept through Canadian Armed Forces Base in Wainwright, Alberta, and what followed was one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime,” Carney said. Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said he is travelling to Edmonton and will be briefed on the latest developments regarding the incident. Story continues below advertisement

Several dead in major fire at Canada military base - follow live - BBC

Military base fire comes days before Alberta referendumpublished at 18:38 BSTJessica MurphyCanada digital editor Image source, AFP via Getty ImagesThis would be a challenging moment for any prime minister. For Mark Carney, this comes at an especially delicate time politically in Alberta. On Monday, Albertans will vote in a referendum on whether to pursue independence - on of the most significant challenges to Canadian unity in decades. Carney just now made no mention of that vote - it would not have been the place. But he made clear that Canada as a whole would be there for the wounded and the families of all the victims, many of whom will hail from that western province, just like Carney. "In Canada, we take care of each other," he said in his brief remarks. He also highlighted the close collaboration between the federal government and the provincial government in the immediate response to the crisis. It is also a significant blow to a military that is only now beginning to receive significant government support after decades of underfunding. Ottawa is funneling in billions to shore up old equipment, boost pay and get the armed forces up to Nato spending compliance.

RJ Mitte's mother addresses rumors about her son's death - A.V. Club

As is the regrettable case whenever a public figure dies these days, it’s left to their loved ones to not only deal with their grief, but to combat the swirls of often irresponsible gossip left behind on the internet. That was the task left to Dyna Mitte, whose son, actor RJ Mitte committed suicide nearly a week ago. The Breaking Bad star was 34. Following a Celebration of Life ceremony for the actor in Brownsville, Texas on Sunday, Dyna Mitte spoke via Zoom with The Hollywood Reporter not only to celebrate her son’s life but to put to rest at least some of the speculation concerning possible contributing factors to RJ Mitte’s death. Mitte began by speaking to other parents, noting, “It’s important for parents to realize that there may be big signs or small signs. If you notice, even in conversation, that there are struggles or questions, be really in tune with your children and take the steps you can to help.” Mitte noted that she had been urging her son to seek therapy for months prior to his death.
