Your new Apple HomeView, huggable as it may be, will already be old when it’s finally in your hands next month. The oldness is etched right into the throwback design, some of which, yes, is Apple Watch-like, or an intentional wink at classic and beloved Apple gear from ancient history like the iMac G4. But its proportions and thick black bezel prematurely age it in a less retro-cool way too, calling to mind the iPads of eight years ago. And the guts are rapidly aging as well. Its A18 iPhone processor was cutting-edge two years ago, and its paltry memory offering of 8 gigs marks this as a device meant to be sold to the consumers of the past—because that’s exactly what it is, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman’s earlier columns asserted the development of an Apple smart home device with a screen long, long ago—a “low-end iPad,” he wrote with laser accuracy all the way back in 2023. But along the way, his sources apparently fed him stories about a problem that squeezed the product pipeline nearly to death: AI-powered Siri sucked for years before Apple finally got it to work.
As Gurman reported in March, the embryonic product destined to become the HomeView had to be

Ukrainian drones reportedly strike Yandex data center, warehouses in overnight attack on Russia - The Kyiv Independent
Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated. Ukrainian forces appeared to strike multiple targets across Russia's Moscow, Rostov, and Vladimir regions in a widespread drone attack overnight on Oct. 16. The Kyiv Independent can not independently verify attack targets or damage at this time. According to monitoring channels ExileNova+ and SuperNova+, Russian technology giant Yandex's data center in Vladimir Oblast, around 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the Ukrainian border, was targeted in the overnight operation. Footage from residents at the scene shows large explosions and air defense systems operating around residential buildings. Following strikes on the same Yandex site on Oct. 11, the company announced operations at the data center had been completely shut down. That strike marked the third near-consecutive day of attacks on Yandex data centers in Russia, following confirmed strikes in Ryazan and Kaluga oblasts on Oct. 8 and 9. The string of attacks on Russian data centers follows President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement that Ukraine would retaliate in kind to Russian strikes on Ukrainian internet infrastructure.

Two New Studies Show How Hard It Is to Track MERS-CoV - Global Biodefense
More than a decade after Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first identified, the world still has a limited view of where it is circulating. Two studies published this month in the CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases look at why. One audits the public genomic record. The other tests whether COVID-19 exposure can make antibody tests give misleading results. MERS-CoV is carried by dromedary camels and spills over into people intermittently. As of September 29, 2026, health authorities worldwide had reported 2,649 cases, including 960 deaths, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s running tally of WHO and national data, a fatality rate of about 36%. Saudi Arabia accounts for about 84% of cases. Reports have declined sharply in recent years, and ECDC noted earlier this year that newly reported cases are at their lowest level since 2014. No licensed vaccine or therapeutic exists.
