New research shows how microplastics and water interactions could lead to cell damage - Hanford Sentinel

U. S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin speaks during a roundtable with U. S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on efforts to combat forever chemicals, at EPA headquarters on May 18, 2026, in Washington, D. C. (Heather Diehl/Getty Images/TNS) LOS ANGELES — Scientists have found microplastics in virtually every part of the human body. Yet many questions remain about what exactly these infinitesimal flecks of synthetic polymers do to human health, and how they might cause disease.

Enhanced X-ray shielding performance of HDPE–Sb₂O₃ composites in the diagnostic dental X-ray energy range - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractDeveloping lightweight, efficient radiation shielding materials remains a critical challenge for diagnostic X-ray applications. In the present work, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with different concentrations of antimony oxide (Sb₂O₃) were investigated as potential alternatives to conventional radiation shielding materials. The present study specifically aimed to evaluate the effect of Sb₂O₃ loading on the low-energy X-ray shielding performance and material characteristics of HDPE composites. The composites were prepared using melt-mixing and hot-pressing techniques with Sb₂O₃ additives of 5–15 wt%. Then, experimental measurements were conducted over 50–150 kVp, whereas computational simulations were performed at discrete photon energies of 32.5–64.5 keV.

Ukraine's drone pilots want simple attack drones in large numbers. A soldier says Western designs are often overcomplicated. - Business Insider

Ukraine's drone operators want drones that they can send en masse and tailor to their own needs. Ukrainian drone operators need masses of relatively simple drones without a bunch of flashy features, a soldier with firsthand experience explained, cautioning the West against making them too complicated as it readies for future drone fights. Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion is a grinding war of attrition that is consuming weaponry so fast that combatants need affordable weapons in huge numbers, and battlefield technology becomes obsolete so quickly that soldiers need systems they can update easily to keep them relevant in battle. Dmytro "Liber" Zhluktenko, a former drone operator who is now a lessons learned analyst in Ukraine's 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment "RAID," told Business Insider that "we need something that works great but doesn't have superfluous features. ""That is something that most of the Western defense technology manufacturers, they get it so wrong," he said. Consider first-person-view attack drones, "we need something that is really basic.

Coastal homes burn as hot winds fuel California wildfires

Thousands evacuate Southern California as wind-fueled fires burn homesFire crews in Southern California gained ground Saturday on a wind-driven blaze that charred hills and damaged or destroyed at least six large coastal homes, allowing evacuation orders to be lifted and thousands of people to return home. The fast-moving Norte Fire sparked the previous day in San Clemente amid hot, strong Santa Ana winds that drove it into San Juan Capistrano, prompting the evacuation of about 16,000 residents. Firefighters work to douse a house fire during the Norte Fire on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.(AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)Hundreds of firefighters deployed to combat the blaze in the hills of Orange County. At one home engulfed in smoke and fire, photos showed them using hoses to try to douse the flames. Most of the evacuations were lifted Saturday evening, except for one street in San Clemente. The Norte Fire was one of several in the region hit by the Santa Anas, which blow from the interior and toward the coast.

Astronomers discover a giant volcano on Mars that may hide the remnants of an ice glacier - The Brighter Side of News

Orbital observations suggest that a deeply eroded region near Mars’ equator contains the remains of a giant volcanic complex. Landforms and sulfate deposits point to past interactions between volcanic material and ice, but surviving buried glacier ice remains unconfirmed. Follow-up research and a proposed helicopter mission highlight the region’s scientific appeal without establishing present volcanic activity or a usable water reserve. A maze of fractured plateaus and canyons near Mars’ equator may preserve the remains of an enormous volcano. Within that landscape, scientists have also identified clues that glacier ice could survive beneath volcanic debris. Together, the observations make eastern Noctis Labyrinthus a compelling target for investigating the planet’s changing environment. The proposal concerns terrain already photographed by generations of spacecraft. Its significance lies in recognizing a possible geological structure within that familiar landscape, rather than discovering an unseen mountain. The volcano’s history and the present condition of any buried ice remain open questions.

NASA Spacecraft OSIRIS-APEX Prepares for Rare 2029 Apophis Flyby Within 20,000 Miles of Earth - cristinaiglesias.com

On 13 April 2029, the massive asteroid Apophis will sweep within 20,000 miles (approximately 32,000 kilometres) of Earth’s surface—passing closer than standard geostationary broadcast satellites in a rare celestial event that occurs only once every 7,500 years. Stationed in deep space, NASA‘s OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft will capture the flyby from afar as the rocky body glides past the night side of our planet, clearly visible to millions of naked-eye observers across Europe and northern Africa. Originally deployed under the name OSIRIS-REx, the spacecraft completed its primary objective in September 2023 when it returned a historic sample from the asteroid Bennu. Rather than retiring the craft, mission controllers repurposed the probe to rendezvous with Apophis in late spring 2029, turning a completed voyage into a secondary deep-space pursuit.

NASA Confirms Orion Heat Shield Survived Asteroid-Speed 48,000 km/h Earth Reentry - cristinaiglesias.com

NASA has confirmed that the Orion heat shield successfully withstood temperatures reaching 2,200 degrees Celsius (4,000 degrees Fahrenheit) while slicing through the atmosphere at almost 48,000 km/h (30,000 mph)—or 39 times the speed of sound. Despite facing extreme asteroid-speed reentry conditions during the Artemis II mission, temperatures inside the crew capsule never exceeded a comfortable 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit), keeping the four astronauts safe throughout their return from lunar orbit. The post-flight findings represent a massive engineering triumph for the American space agency, especially after the uncrewed Artemis I test flight in 2022 revealed alarming surface erosion. Critical data now demonstrates that an innovative trajectory adjustment reduced thermal cracking and char loss by a factor of ten, successfully validating the thermal protection system without requiring a physical redesign.

NASA to Buy a New Space Station. Price Tag: $34.1 Billion - The Motley Fool

By now, you've heard the news: The International Space Station, which began construction in 1998 and was originally only supposed to last for 15 years, is finally getting ready to retire. Sometime after 2030, Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies will launch a dedicated mission to "deorbit" ISS, pushing the station into a fiery death as it burns in Earth's atmosphere before drowning in the ocean's depths -- and NASA will pay SpaceX $850 million for the privilege. Well, at least four separate teams have floated plans to build a new space station (or space stations), which will be privately owned but leased to NASA (and others) for research missions. Private space companies Axiom Space, Blue Origin-led Orbital Reef, a consortium collectively known as Starlab, and Vast are all part of this effort. It's not 100% clear which of these teams will win, but we should get a clue soon.
