A travel expert who flies 150,000 miles a year shares the one item he always packs, even though he's rarely used it - Business Insider

Flight expert Zach Griff shares why he always brings an extra phone in his carry-on backpack. It's probably tucked away in a drawer, stashed in your desk or nightstand, beneath chargers, stray cords, and pieces of paper you don't think you're supposed to throw out but probably will never need again. You probably haven't thought about it since you put it there. But Zach Griff's old phone is in his carry-on backpack. Griff, a travel expert and author of the travel newsletter From the Tray Table, estimates that he flies an average of 150,000 miles a year. And for the past 11 years, he said, he's carried his retired cellphone with him around the world. Why you should always travel with 2 phones

Google Adopts Pyrefly for Faster, More Accurate Python Type Checking - infoq.com

Google has replaced its long-standing Python type checker, Pytype, with Pyrefly, an open-source tool originally developed by Meta. The decision was driven by Pyrefly's advantages, including faster and more accurate type checking, and lower infrastructure costs. As Python’s typing system evolved rapidly, Pytype faced fundamental challenges. Because it operated by analyzing compiled bytecode rather than source ASTs, keeping pace with modern typing PEPs became an increasing maintenance burden due to bytecode instability across Python releases.

Best of Both Worlds: 'Hybrid' Quantum Computers Could Be Just Around The Corner, Researchers Say - ScienceAlert

For all their promise, quantum computers have a hard time modeling the interactions between the two families of building blocks that underlie our Universe – can you imagine a chef that struggles to describe how sugar and milk make cake? But researchers may have found a way to overcome this challenge by modeling a theoretical 'hybrid' quantum computer that promises to combine the best of both worlds. The fundamental particles that make up the cosmic cake of our existence are grouped as either fermions or bosons. In simplest terms, fermions are particles of matter, including electrons and protons, and bosons include force-mediating particles, like the photons (light) that carry the electromagnetic force.  Quantum computers are great at modeling fermions, because they're more discrete, just like the qubits that power quantum computing.

Scientists Find a ‘Ghostly Green’ Star, and That’s Not the Only Crazy Color - CNET

High school science class taught us that stars come in very specific colors. You have cooler stars that are red, orange and yellow. Then you have hotter, larger stars that are white and blue. It turns out that much like the wind in the movie Pocahontas, stars also come in all sorts of colors, including green and pink. The discovery was outlined in a study published this month in RAS Techniques and Instruments. According to the lead author, Mark Hollands of Warwick University’s astronomy and astrophysics group, the humble white dwarf star is the centerpiece of this chromatic curiosity.

Feature: The Seven-Year Silence: How Ocarina Of Time Held My Grief At Seven Years Old

Image: Gavin Lane / Nintendo LifeThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is frequently crowned the greatest game ever made, celebrated for its dungeons, its music, and a critical legacy that stands as the highest-reviewed title in gaming history. For those of us who were there at the time, it was for gaming what the sequence in The Wizard of Oz is when the world around Dorothy turns to colour: pure magic and wonder. But for those of us who look to art to make sense of the unthinkable, it was something much more fragile and vital. In the summer of my seventh year my world collapsed, and that same winter a Nintendo 64 cartridge became the only safe space I had left to process the loss of my father.

Finnish Farmers Make Tractor Pulls More Exciting by Adding a Big Hill

As fun as motorsports are, sometimes it’s even more fun to give traditional formats a remix. Take, for example, the Colombian semi-truck shootout that adds trailers and a time-attack course instead of having trucks go head-to-head on a drag strip. Finland is legendary for producing great racing drivers, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this country has also put its own spin on tractor pulls. Sammi, a small village in western Finland with a population of about 250, hosts an annual tractor pull. As documented in a recent YouTube video from Hans’s Garage, it’s not like the events you’ll find in the United States. American tractor pulls are generally held on flat ground, and the pulling tractors generally drag specially-built sleds designed to transfer weight as they’re moved to increase difficulty. That’s not the case here.

This Wild Dune Buggy Was the Follow-Up to the Meyers Manx

Did you know Bruce Meyers designed a street rod follow-up to the dune buggy? The styling on this second-generation SR is bananas, but it’s an easy-to-work-on VW underneath. This one also has its official Manx certification. The original Meyers Manx dune buggy, endlessly copied and re-created, is an indisputable automotive icon. You only need to look at one to instantly hear the Beach Boys singing about California sun and surf, cruising along the beach on a warm summer evening. But Bruce Meyers didn’t just stop at the sand. Bring a TrailerA wild-looking piece of Manx history just turned up at Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos): a Karma Coachworks SR2. What year does it hail from? Well, that’s a bit of an open question, as the chassis that underpins it is a 1970 Volkswagen, but the car was built a little later. Bring a TrailerA Manx SR was featured on the cover of Car and Driver’s May 1970 issue, where we noted that it pegged the fun-to-drive meter for not much money, same as the original Manx Dune Buggy did.

Lance Rogan wrapped in a rescue blanket after spending the night on the Moab 240 race course. (Robson Rogan)After months of training, a Kamloops-raised ultramarathoner is headed home to B. C. after a severe storm thwarted his dream to complete the Moab 240 last Sunday. The 386-kilometre course — through desert, canyons, red rock and two mountain ranges in Utah — is a prestigious trail race for endurance athletes who come from all over the world. "The heat was super extreme before the rain hit, I tracked around 37 to 40 degrees Celsius, so it was very dry but very beautiful and unlike anything I’ve ever seen," Lance Rogan said. But the U. S.

FACES OF ARKANSAS: Becky Kay — October 2026 Face of Arkansas - The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is partnering with Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' office to present a series of profiles based on the governor's Faces of Arkansas, which highlights the story of one Arkansan each month. Becky KayMiracle of Life (October)At 18, Becky Kay stood in line at the University of Arkansas at Monticello with a course catalog in her hands and a decision to make. She had gone to college to play basketball. She thought she might become a teacher. But when it came time to register for classes, she was told she needed to choose a major. So, she opened the catalog. "I flipped it open, and there was a two-year associate program in nursing," Becky remembers. "I said, 'Oh, I'll do nursing.'"There was no lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. In fact, Becky had never even known one. She had barely spent time inside a hospital. But 48 years later, she is still certain she ended up exactly where she was supposed to be. "That was God shoving me in the right direction," she says. Becky became a nurse at 20 years old. Early in her career, she worked in an area of the hospital where she frequently lost patients. The work weighed on her. Then she found labor and delivery.
