The wildfire risk across western North Carolina this week. (WLOS)ASHEVILLE, N. C. (WLOS) — Outdoor burning is discouraged this week as continued dry conditions increase wildfire concerns. The North Carolina Forest Service has most of western North Carolina at a "very high" risk level for wildfires on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday, Oct. 21. The wildfire danger in the region on Thursday and Friday drops into the "high" risk as relative humidity increases slightly and winds decrease. The second wildfire season of the year traditionally runs October through December in western North Carolina.

Video of an ICE arrest in Long Beach is drawing scrutiny. Now, a local congressman is calling for an investigation. Tuesday, October 20, 2026 12:57AMLONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Video showing federal immigration agents taking a man to the ground during an arrest in Long Beach has drawn scrutiny from local leaders and advocacy groups, with one congressman now demanding an investigation. According to witnesses, Ricardo Gonzalez, a former Long Beach city worker, was riding a bicycle Saturday when U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pursued him in SUVs and took him to the ground in a neighborhood. Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has publicly said why Gonzalez was arrested. Advocates say the man seen being detained is a U. S. citizen. Eyewitness News has not confirmed his citizenship status. During the arrest, Gonzalez could be heard yelling that his arm was broken. The advocacy group StopICE.net reported that agents had positioned their vehicles in the middle of a Long Beach neighborhood and issued an alert. More than a dozen activists subsequently arrived at the scene and confronted the agents. U. S. Rep.
At the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles late Monday, several green card holders arrested in a crackdown on alleged California voter fraud expressed confusion over the charges — with some saying they had no recollection of registering to vote, as Trump administration officials accuse them of doing. Among them was Ana Domínguez, 60, a native of El Salvador living in Long Beach as a lawful permanent resident. Federal authorities accused her Monday of fraudulently registering to vote in July 2006 and then lying about it in her naturalization paperwork in March 2026. Domínguez said she did not have any memory of registering to vote. Another man accused of the same crimes as Domínguez said the same: He wasn’t aware of ever registering to vote, as federal prosecutors claimed he had. Both were among the 28 people charged with federal election-related crimes Monday, including fraudulent voter registration and making false statements in a naturalization application.
Abbott told ABC13 he is working hard to turn out the vote in Harris County, but a new poll reveals it could be a heavy lift for the three-term Republican governor.
It was a night of change for many municipalities across B. C. on Saturday night as incumbent mayors and most of their slates were voted out of office.
Former Surrey councillor Barinder Rasode said it appeared to be an election driven by a desire for change, not an ideological shift. “It was a real indication and need for change on issues that matter to community around public safety, affordability and housing,” she said. But for some, the unexpected results have them wondering if it is an indication of what might happen during the provincial election this Saturday. “The shelf life of a successful government in Canada now is about 10 years,” Hamish Telford, University of the Fraser Valley political science associate professor, said. “The NDP have been in power now for nine now under two premiers.” Story continues below advertisement

Emergency crews in New Hampshire Monday contained an unidentified oil spill at Sunapee Harbor, less than a week after containing a hydraulic oil spill in a separate area. At 4:16 p.m., the Sunapee Fire Department confirmed a visible oil spill affecting portions of the harbor, the department said in a statement. The spill was visible near the Indian Cave Docks, The Blue Canoe, and on the shoreline near the Wild Goose Country Store, the statement said. Fire crews searched the surrounding area but could not find the source of the spill, according to the department. The substance may be gear oil or hydraulic oil, based on initial observations by the fire department and photographic review by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. A sample of the substance was collected for analysis, the statement said. The spill was fully contained at 5:40 p.m., according to the statement. Officials used equipment like containment booms — floating barriers — to prevent the spill from spreading into Lake Sunapee, or from traveling downstream, the fire department said. Get N. H. Michael McCormack knows Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton well. The Xaverian senior from neighboring Easton was at his home course Monday, chasing the lead in the MIAA Division 1 South sectional qualifier. “I just stayed patient the whole entire day,” said McCormack. “I just had to hit fairways and greens, and I knew I had a chance to win.”Trailing by two strokes with two holes to go, McCormack sank a 35-foot birdie putt on the 182-yard par-3 17th hole to give himself a chance. Wellesley senior Aarav Lavu bogeyed his second-to-last hole, on hole 1, bringing him to 1-over-par with McCormack. On his final hole, Lavu hit a 220-foot approach shot to around 10 feet, leaving himself a birdie putt for the win. “I knew where I stood,” said Lavu. “I just hit a great four-iron. Gave myself a chance to win it.”Lavu’s birdie putt rolled past the pin, and he tapped in for par. He finished tied for first at 1-over 71 with McCormack.
