Somehow, This Chevy Camaro ‘Carralo’ Is Real and Not Something From GTA

The makers of Grand Theft Auto have mastered the art of generic-looking cars. While they sometimes cross the line into recognizability, the cars of GTA usually look just enough like real-world cars to give you an idea of what they’re supposed to be, without triggering any lawsuits. And sometimes life imitates art when somebody takes the trouble to bend sheet metal or mold fiberglass, only to have the end product look like it rolled straight out of the game. This 1989 Chevrolet Camaro is one such example. Currently for sale on Craigslist, it’s a custom-bodied Carralo that was one of only two made for that model year, according to the listing. A further 90 were made as 1990 models, so maybe things were just getting ramped up for 1989. I’ve never seen one of these before, but thanks to the GTA-like design, I kind of feel like I have.

Amazingly Preserved 37,000-Mile ’76 Chevy Pickup Has Had Only One Owner

Here’s a stunningly preserved Chevy “square-body” pickup from America’s Bicentennial year. Unlike restomodded vintage pickups, it is as it was: no lift kit, no giant wheels, just a manual gearbox and 4x4 capability. This pickup clearly has been cared for over the years. Here’s hoping the next owner does the same. In 1976, America celebrated the 200th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Wings’ “Silly Love Songs” was all over the radio, and Sylvester Stallone was going the distance in theaters as Rocky. In that same year, a man walked into a Chevy dealership in Colorado and drove out of it in an honest and simple pickup truck of a kind you just can’t find anymore. And he just kept it. Bring a TrailerNow up for auction at Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), this 1976 Chevrolet K10 pickup is as much of a time capsule as those that were dug up this year to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Incredibly, it has had the same owner since new and has accumulated just 37K miles in those 50 years.

The Reason New Tires Have Colored Stripes On The Tread

If you've ever purchased a new set of tires for your car, you may have noticed colored lines painted on the treads. They usually stand out as bright stripes that encircle the tire, and their function is to help identify products or rubber compounds as they move through production. Their purpose is for the people and equipment making the tires, rather than the person buying them. German company REA, which supplies marking equipment to the tire industry, says automated color lines are used for material type identification. Its systems can mark rubber components and finished tires, giving factories a way to distinguish materials and products during production. Those markings are an important tool for workers or machines to distinguish one type of tire from another. By the time the tires arrive at a retailer and have been installed on your vehicle, the painted lines have served their purpose. They will eventually wear off as the tires accumulate mileage.

Tested: 1995 Mitsubishi Montero SR Is One for Gadget Freaks

From the March 1995 issue of Car and Driver. Let’s be honest here: the reason sport-utility vehicles are selling faster than earplugs at a Michael Bolton concert is not because global temperatures are down and average snowfall is up and Americans need four-wheel drive in order to reach the video store for those adult-education tapes hidden behind that veil of beads. It’s because, in contrast to other roomy conveyances like station wagons and minivans, every SUV projects an image. The Hummer wears a Gold’s Gym body. The Grand Cherokee is as outdoorchic as an Orvis flyrod. And the Mitsubishi Montero SR, the object of this review, packs all the techno-wizardry of a Sharper Image catalog. Aaron Kiley|Car and DriverThose who enjoy Pentiums and DirecTV and EOS cameras will feel immediately at home in the SR. The instrument cluster is straight off the set of The Hunt for Red October, with gauges for everything from four-wheel-drive mode to oil pressure to volts to a useful new electronic compass and exterior-temperature display that replaces the frivolous “lean-angle” inclinometer. Why, the SR has more buttons than a Marine Corps parade.

Tobias Sühlmann, Porsche’s New Design Chief, Likes to Work Quickly

Tobias Sühlmann didn’t have much time to settle into his new role as Porsche’s vice president of style. “It was full on from the first day,” he tells Car and Driver in his first one-on-one interview with the American press. Just a few months after his start in February, he received a call from Porsche CEO Michael Leiters—“on a Saturday evening,” Sühlmann notes—that set out his first major task. “He said, ‘There should be a car above the 911, and it could be a mid-engine car, and let’s develop some ideas.’ ”The resulting vehicle is the all-new Porsche Mission S, which was just revealed in New York. This production-ready two-door mid-engine super sports car came about on a startlingly rapid timeline, which seems like it would be a challenge. Fortunately, going fast is something Sühlmann enjoys. “I like to work quicker,” he says. “You have to have a clear vision, you have to translate the vision into surfaces, you have to talk to the team, and the team has to have the same mindset.” The handsome, purposeful, and impassioned design of the new car demonstrates the efficacy of his efforts.

Bentley May Be Owned By Volkswagen, But Its Cars Aren't Built In Germany

A Bentley's blend of effortless pace and traditional craftsmanship is central to its unmistakable British character and charm. But is Bentley still truly British today? That's a fact enthusiasts still argue over, and those that say it isn't, point to a crucial moment in Bentley's history that happened almost 30 years ago. Bentley was founded in 1919, and made its name with a series of luxury, high-performance road cars, plus consecutive victories at races like Le Mans in the 1920s. But the Great Depression that followed the 1929 Wall Street Crash brought the brand to its knees, allowing rival Rolls-Royce to sweep in and take control. The Bentley name survived, but for the next six decades its cars would rely on Rolls-Royce chassis and engines. Some Rolls and Bentley cars were virtually identical during this period, although Bentley was still able to carve out its own identity with models like the 1952 R-Type Continental, the inspiration for today's Continental GT.

Explained: Here’s How the Tesla Roadster Flies, Flips, and Sucks

Yes, the just-revealed Tesla Roadster astonished the reveal crowd by jumping without a ramp and driving upside down, but how did it do that? The electric sports car was able to lift off using cold-gas thruster technology from SpaceX and 250 kilos of compressed air. We’re not saying any of this will make it to production, but at least we can explain what we saw. Elon Musk has launched a Tesla Roadster all the way to space, but it was the much lower-altitude stunt reveal of the new Tesla Roadster that showed how much spectacle can still find an audience. While the two highlights—a jump-slash-flip and driving upside down on a half-circle ramp—felt like scenes from an action movie, they were real. Just like the movies, though, a bit of behind-the-scenes magic was needed to make it happen, like out-of-this-world components from SpaceX. Here’s how the new Tesla Roadster defied gravity in Texas. TeslaThrust from SpaceXLet’s start with the basics. The new Roadster is said to weigh around 3700 pounds and is rear-wheel drive only, with two electric motors in the rear that are said to produce up to 1500 horsepower and more torque than any Tesla Model S Plaid.

Here’s How Much More It Costs To Replace A Modern Key Than A 1990s Key

I recently bought a 2014 BMW i3, which I love. What I don’t love is that it only came with a single key, which may seem like a minor problem until you realize: A replacement key costs as much as a car. Here’s how much more a new key for my i3 costs than a new one for my 1994 Jeep. This is my first time looking for a replacement key for a modern vehicle with a key fob, and I have to say: I’m appalled. Ever since I could drive, I’ve only ever purchased cars with basic keys like this one in my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Tesla Roadster Fans Are Ripping On The New Electric Citroën 2CV And I Won’t Stand For It

Over this past week, there have been, as I see it, two significant concept car reveals that seem to have captured the attention of the public even beyond the usual gearhead communities: the new electric Citroën 2CV and Tesla’s cold-gas thruster-equipped Roadster (that’s not actually a roadster). Both of these novel machines have garnered a lot of media and social media coverage, and seem to have captured the imaginations of many people, for some dramatically different reasons, which makes sense, as they represent the two polar opposite extremes of the concept car spectrum. What’s puzzling and disheartening is a strange trend that our co-founder David noticed, where there seem to be an unusual number of people posting comparisons between the Tesla Roadster and the Citroën 2CV, where they maintain that the Roadster is somehow this incredible thing that makes the 2CV look like some embarrassing toy, and from there they extrapolate that into some sort of America vs. Europe or Capitalism vs. Socialism or some other charged and ultimately deeply inane comparison.

Renault's Wild 8 Gordini Concept May Hit The Production Line

Many electric cars feel like boring appliances on wheels, but Renault is committed to making its EVs fun and full of character. It's done this with models like the 4 and 5 E-Tech, plus the insane, limited-run 5 Turbo 3E hyper hatch with 550 horsepower. Soon, the French brand may follow up that model with a production version of the new 8 Gordini concept. This wild creation, which premiered at this week's Paris Motor Show, is inspired by the iconic 8 Gordini of the '60s and takes the form of a compact two-seater coupe that absolutely nails the retro design brief. While Renault didn't announce plans to build a production version when presenting the concept, company boss Fabrice Cambolive is open to the idea, only after deliveries of the 5 Turbo 3E start.

Why The Toyota GR GT Is The Only Ultra-Expensive Supercar I’m Actually Excited About

Supercars are weird. I wouldn’t dream of speaking for all car people out in the zeitgeist, but I do know that I’m surrounded by a good group of coworkers here and a lot of “normie” car folk who seem to have all gotten to the point where they look at the stupid, expensive sports cars of the world and just say, “Who cares?” I’ll pretty much always give the manufacturers a head nod purely at an engineering level, because it’s impressive what folks can accomplish with a car when they set their mind to it. Hell, David is a shitbox maestro with a backyard that looks like a chemical plant explosion thanks to our Jeep build, and even he absolutely adores the Bugatti Veyron no matter how superfluous and excessive it is. But the prospect of ever having enough pocket change to spend on something like a several-hundred-thousand-dollar (if not million-plus-dollar) car is so outside of the realm of possibility that I get bored of all the articles and press releases that cover one.

Porsche CEO Says the Mission S Platform Is Compatible with a Manual

The newly revealed Porsche Mission S mid-engine supercar platform is engineered to support a traditional manual gearbox alongside automated PDK options. Porsche leadership confirmed that offering a manual transmission in the production model will ultimately depend on market demand and buyer feedback. The retro-inspired Mission S concept features traditional driver-focused elements, like a physical key, signaling a commitment to mechanical engagement. The Porsche Mission S concept car that was recently revealed is meant to point the way towards the automaker’s future—one where a new flagship supercar above the 911 pushes the brand upmarket while strengthening ties to the company’s past. And that future, it seems, could include an old-fashioned row-your-own transmission. During remarks at the launch event in New York City, Porsche CEO Dr. Michael Leiters stressed that the new supercar has a flexible platform that’s compatible with multiple powertrains, and he specifically said that it could be powered by either pure internal-combustion engines or hybrid ones. More interestingly, it can also accept either manual or PDK-style automatic transmissions.

Tesla Made A Lot Of Bold Claims About The New Roadster, But Do You Believe Any Of Them?

How real was what we saw? How likely will it make production? In 2018, Elon Musk told Joe Rogan he'd use thrusters to make a Tesla fly. Last night, the brand drove a car upside down, sent it off a ramp, flipped it over, and landed it. Then it cleared a line of its own vehicles with another aerial maneuver. Whatever you think of Musk, that was one hell of a way to introduce a sports car. Watching another executive pull a sheet off another car is going to fall a little flat for a while.
