Back before we had gargantuan three-row SUVs to haul stuff around in, station wagons were often configured as utility vehicles. Prime example: the Ecto-1. Before it was re-tasked as an otherworldly urban assault vehicle, it served New York City as an ambulance. And while the Ghostbusters’ ride was effectively coach-built by Miller-Meteor using GM engines and underpinnings, other niche models, like this Volvo 245 Transfer, came that way straight from the factory.
You’ll need to break out your browser’s translator (or speak Swedish) if you want to dive deep under the hood of this oddball long-roof model. The brochure showcases it as a taxi cab, but it was also marketed as a solution for rural ambulance and school bus services. According to Teknikens Värld, the added length made it both difficult to maneuver and more expensive to fill up if you drove it around town a lot, but that’s what you get for stretching out what was already a pretty long car in 1977.

You Have To Move To Japan To Buy One Of The Rarest C8 Corvettes Ever
Brett T. Evans has more than a decade of experience driving, writing about, and evaluating automobiles. His early career comprised writing about pre- and post-war classic cars, as well as late-model performance diesel trucks. These varied experiences allowed him the chance to gain expertise in every corner of the auto world. Today, he spends much of his time on modern car culture and mass-market news. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible is getting some special attention from a most unlikely place. The Bow Tie's Japanese business arm will build a rare special edition of the V8-powered droptop, and although the changes are primarily cosmetic, hardcore Corvette fans may want to consider moving to Hokkaido or Kyoto to get their hands on one. Although oddly, the new V8 Tourer – as it's called – doesn't even get the American market's updated 6.7-liter small-block engine. This could be the first time that JDM "forbidden fruit" is less tasty than the American varietal.

2027 Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon

LOWSTrucky on-road behavior, interior quality does not confer luxury, no third row. VERDICTThe Ineos Grenadier is an uncompromising off-road conqueror packed with vintage charm, but its coarse on-road demeanor limits its appeal. Seating 5 Seats Powertrain Gas Drivetrain Four-Wheel Drive Limited Warranty 5 Years/60,000 Miles By Austin ParsonsOverview Take a look at the current crop of luxury mid-size SUVs, and the Ineos Grenadier stands out like a pager in a pile of iPhones. Its rugged, vintage design calls back to a bygone era of boxy 1980's adventure rigs—it looks almost identical to an old Land Rover Defender 110—and its cabin is filled with toggles and switches rather than screens and touch-capacitive buttons. Most of the Grenadier's underpinnings are old-school, too. With body-on-frame construction, recirculating ball steering, solid front and rear axles, three locking differentials, and a two-speed transfer case with manual engagement, the Grenadier rejects modernity to be the most capable off-roader that it can be.

LOWSRetro driving experience may be a turn-off for some, not as luxurious as rival SUVs, lacks a third row of seats. VERDICTThe utilitarian Grenadier is an off-road SUV that derives its luxury status more from its capability and its novelty than from its on-road comfort. Seating 5 Seats Powertrain Gas Drivetrain Four-Wheel Drive Limited Warranty 5 Years/60,000 Miles By Drew DorianOverview If you're increasingly put off by new automotive technology, the 2026 Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon might be exactly what you're looking for. Its old-school design makes for a simplistic, utilitarian SUV, meaning its hard-core off-road capability takes center stage. There's just one screen inside, a 12.3-inch infotainment readout that also doubles as a gauge cluster. The Grenadier’s body-on-frame construction and old-fashioned chassis components admittedly deliver an unrefined on-road demeanor, but certain drivers will find the Grenadier appealing rather than unsophisticated.

Genesis Just Built The Full-Size Luxury Wagon Mercedes And BMW Refuse To Sell
In the dying wagon and convertible markets, Genesis dares to patent new safety tech for its convertible concept that could come to market. The full-size luxury wagon has long been a body style that Europe's prestige brands acknowledge but refuse to fully commit to at the top of their lineups. Mercedes-Benz will sell you an E-Class wagon, and BMW will hand you the keys to an M5 Touring — but neither Stuttgart nor Munich has ever been willing to stretch their flagship sedans into long-roof territory. Now, Genesis is calling that bluff. The brand's G90 Wingback Concept takes the full-size G90 Sedan and gives it a sweeping roofline, a tailgate, and the full Magma performance treatment. It's still a concept — but it's the kind of concept that forces competitors to reconsider their assumptions.

Subaru Is Developing Its Own EVs, and It Starts With a 510-HP AWD Station Wagon Prototype
Subaru unveiled an all-new in-house electric vehicle platform to the media over the weekend, according to Automotive News—one that comes packing a very exciting 500-plus horsepower from its battery-powered all-wheel drive system. Toyota and Subaru have partnered on EV development for the last five-plus years, but Subaru is now prepared to go solo, according to the report. The new dedicated EV platform, along with a new battery, new electric motor technology, and a new integrated control unit, was revealed at Subaru’s test course north of Tokyo on Sunday. And a generous helping of performance is on the menu. SubaruThe current Subaru Uncharted, one of four EV SUVs it currently offers that are co-made with Toyota. Subaru told Automotive News that its prototype EV’s dual motors combine for a combined power output of around 510 horsepower and a 0-62 mile-per-hour sprint in under four seconds. The automaker declined to specify a timeline for production, but Subaru executives said the technology will start rolling out in 2029. The new platform is also around 220 pounds lighter than its current EV platform.
