Scientists make a concerning discovery beneath Antarctica’s largest ice shelf - Futura, le média qui explore le monde

The Ross Ice Shelf is Antarctica’s largest floating ice platform, covering an area about the size of France. In 2017, a research team drilled a borehole through 320 meters of central shelf ice. They lowered instruments 420 meters into the dark water column below. Between 2018 and 2022, these sensors recorded continuous ocean data underneath the floating ice sheet.

Effusive sedimentary volcanism experimentally reproduced under Martian-like conditions - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractRapid boiling, cooling, and freezing are commonly assumed to rapidly quench metastable liquid eruptions exposed to near-vacuum planetary environments, influencing both sedimentary volcanism on Mars and cryovolcanism on icy worlds. However, how these coupled phase transitions govern eruptive processes remains largely unknown. Here we show experimentally that boiling instead sustains coupled ballistic-effusive mud eruptions under Martian-like pressure conditions (~4.5 mbar). Using an ice-sealed metastable reservoir, we reproduced subsurface-driven eruptions initiated by internally generated boiling-induced overpressure. Eruptions evolved systematically from short-lived ballistic fountains toward episodic effusive emplacement accompanied by coherent mud-flow formation.

Genomes of 20 eastern Finnish species provide unique insights into species' adaptations to local conditions - Phys.org

The Finnish forest reindeer genome comes from an animal born at Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki. Credit: University of Eastern Finland In recent years, researchers at the University of Eastern Finland have been both leading and contributing to collaborative genome projects. These efforts have produced reference-quality genome assemblies for the Finnish brown hare and the mountain hare, as well as the Saimaa ringed seal, in collaboration with research partners.
