Parliament Today: MPs vote on Conservative affordability motion

A Conservative supply motion asking the House to formally declare that Canada is in an affordability crisis, and that the Liberals have held power for 11 years, comes to a recorded vote this afternoon immediately after Question Period. It is the sole item of government business on today’s agenda. No bills are called for debate, no new legislation is being introduced, and no private members’ business is listed. The vote was first deferred on October 8 and deferred again by an order adopted Monday, so today’s sitting is less a day of debate than a day of putting names on the record ahead of the next opposition day on Thursday. The motion, moved by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre (Battle River—Crowfoot) and seconded by Amanpreet Gill (Calgary Skyview), is short. It asks the House to “officially recognize that: (a) the Liberals have been in power for 11 years; and (b) Canada is in an affordability crisis.” The recorded division will be taken at the expiry of the time provided for Oral Questions, pursuant to the order made Monday, October 19.

EXCLUSIVE POLL: Olivia Chow and Brad Bradford in statistical tie with Toronto election less than one week away - CP24

Olivia Chow’s lead over Brad Bradford has narrowed and is now within the margin of error with less than a week to go before the municipal election, according to a new poll conducted exclusively for CP24 and CTV News Toronto. Nanos Research surveyed 762 adult Toronto residents between Oct. 15 and Oct. 18. It found that 49.8 per cent of decided voters support Chow compared to 46.6 per cent for Bradford. Another four per cent of respondents said they would support another candidate. Chow’s support among decided voters is down one point from a Nanos Research poll released last week while Bradford is up nearly a point. FULL COVERAGE OF THE TORONTO MAYORAL ELECTIONThe margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. That means the race is now effectively a statistical tie. CTV News Chief Data Scientist Nik Nanos said in a statement that the “deciding factors” in the race will be debate performance and “organizational muscle to deliver supporters.” ‘Toronto Decides: The Municipal Debate’ will be broadcast LIVE on CP24, CP24.com and the CP24 app on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.

Another mass shooter strikes, RSV surges, Ebola persists. Plus, what to know about waning flu vaccines. - Your Local Epidemiologist

I’m back from a trip to the East Coast, and the leaves are just starting to turn. There’s just something about red and gold and bright yellow that makes everything in this world feel a little better and cozier. This beauty, sadly, does nothing to stop the fall viruses that are stirring this week, nor a devastating public health problem: mass shootings. All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea review – stirring portrait of fishers driven to eco-activism

Hartlepool fisherman Stan Rennie has been called the next Mr Bates. For nearly 50 years Rennie has fished the same stretch of northeast coastline – then in October 2021, thousands of crabs, starfish and lobsters washed up dead and dying on the beaches. “It was like something out of a horror film,” says one local. Rennie and other fishermen suspected industrial pollution, but an investigation by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs concluded that the most likely cause of the die-off was “algal bloom”. For Rennie and the other fisherman, it didn’t add up. So, they crowdfunded their own independent scientific study. This documentary from Jeanie Finlay (Your Fat Friend) tells the story, and it’s maddening. The fishermen are close to bankruptcy, they’ve got mortgages and kids, catches are down 80%. The cost of diesel is higher than the price of a haul, and most put their boats up for sale. “Any jobs in Lidl?” reads one placard as they protest through town. What the fishermen suspect is that toxic sediment dredged from the River Tees and dumped in the sea is to blame. Their investigation finds evidence of a link to the chemical pyridine, a byproduct of steelmaking.

Windscribe VPN Review 2026: One of the Most Well-Rounded VPNs I’ve Ever Tested - CNET

Windscribe just became my new personal go-to VPN. It’s like Frankenstein’s VPN monster, embodying the streaming prowess of ExpressVPN and NordVPN, the budget-friendliness of Surfshark, the privacy of Mullvad, the versatility of Proton VPN and a malleability all its own. Windscribe is an extremely well-rounded service that excels in a VPN’s most important aspects. Sure, it doesn’t have the vast selection of server locations that some other VPNs do, and it doesn’t offer fancy bundled options that include additional cybersecurity tools, but Windscribe makes up for that by delivering a standalone VPN product that easily rivals the biggest names in the industry — and in most areas, outpaces them.

Even the companies that build them are starting to get worried about all the features. CarBuzz has just found a patent from Ford that would let you simulate using more of those features while the car isn't moving. But it would also demand you simulate them before you can actually use them.

Ontario public-sector unions push province for workplace AI safeguards

Unions representing tens of thousands of public sector workers in Ontario are racing to inject artificial intelligence safeguards into multiple contract negotiations, Global News has learned, as workers express concerns about how Crown agencies plan to use the technology. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents more than 200,000 public sector workers, said language around the current or potential use of AI is being introduced at nearly every bargaining table across the province. “The implication of AI becomes more and more clear in almost every sector we represent,” said OPSEU President JP Hornick. “We have teams working on bargaining guides around AI in almost every area I can think of.”Hornick said among the top concerns are job losses, the replacement of job functions and employers potentially using AI to monitor work. Three mindfulness exercises that take just 30 seconds: Do them 'waiting for the microwave to ring' or 'sitting at a stoplight,' says psychologist - CNBC

When it comes to their health and well-being, Americans focus on food. When asked which wellness activities they typically do at least once a week, 71% of 807 people surveyed say they eat fresh fruit and or vegetables, while 60% say they run, walk, cycle or do other outdoor exercise. That's according to a September 2026 YouGov poll of 1,003 U. S. adults. Just 20% of the 807 people surveyed about their wellness activities also say they practice meditation or mindfulness. While there's no denying the importance of a veggie-heavy diet and a regular exercise regimen, ample research points to the psychological benefits of both meditation and mindfulness. More Americans would probably practice mindfulness if they could, says psychologist and author Eli Susman. Life just gets in the way. "The meeting runs late, dinner needs making, a notification pops up," he says. In his new book "Micropractice: A Science-Backed Approach for Calm, Clarity, and Joy in 30 Seconds or Less," Susman outlines a series of short practices that can be easily plugged into a busy day. The point, he says, is not to spend hours or even minutes on a mindfulness practice. It's just to do it consistently.

East San Fernando Valley light rail line gets underway — five years behind schedule.

The San Fernando Valley is getting closer to its first commuter rail service in more than 70 years. Construction is set to begin this week on a 6.7-mile rail line linking Van Nuys and Pacoima. The nearly $4-billion project, which will run along Van Nuys Boulevard, will include 11 street-level stations and is projected to open in 2032, according to L. A. Metro, the Los Angeles County transit agency. The project is years behind schedule and billions of dollars over its initial estimated budget. Approved in 2018, construction was originally slated to start in 2021, with the line opening in 2027. The cost was projected at $1.3 billion. Metro officials, who broke ground on the project with Metro chair and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Monday, didn’t have an immediate response to questions about why the project had been delayed so long. The Metro board approved a budget increase in May as estimated construction costs rose, according to a board report. In a news release, the agency said funding sources for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project included Measures R and M, two local sales tax measures for transit, and an $893-million grant from the federal government.
