Description

Ministers speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting. Ministers Mélanie Joly (industry), Dominic LeBlanc (Canada-U.S. trade) and François-Philippe Champagne (finance), Lena Diab (immigration) and Marc Miller (Canadian identity and culture) comment on the results of the Alberta referendum, in which 75 per cent of Albertans voted against the possibility of holding a future referendum to separate from Canada. Joly also speaks about the federal government’s next steps in dealing with the U.S.-based owner of Stelco, as the company has began issuing layoff notices to workers at its Hamilton plant earlier this month. LeBlanc faces questions on the government’s plan to resume trade negotiations with the United States. Minister David McGuinty (defence) responds to questions on the investigation into Saturday’s deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. Minister Maninder Sidhu (international trade) comments on the recent trade mission to India, as the government seeks to significantly increase bilateral trade with the country. Minister Steven MacKinnon (transport, government House leader) is asked about funding cuts to the federal government’s Translation Bureau. Mark Gerretson (chief government whip) is asked about the Carney government’s stance when it comes to MPs voting on private members’ bills.
