Aclara and CAP open US-linked rare earths technology plant in Chile - BNamericas

News Bnamericas Published: Thursday, October 08, 2026 Aclara Resources and the business group CAP inaugurated in Chile a demonstration plant to produce rare earth metals and alloys with technology based on the metallurgical experience of Siderúrgica Huachipato.  The implementation is a key step in the companies' plans to build a value chain that begins with extraction in southern Chile, through the Penco Module project, which aims to become the country's first rare earths deposit. The plant was commissioned by Aclara Metals, a 50/50 joint venture between Chilean company CAP and Canadian company Aclara, with an electrolysis cell design that was developed entirely by the teams of both partners.  Through the electrolysis process, the plant will convert neodymium and praseodymium oxides (NdPr) into metals and alloys. The plant has a nominal capacity of up to 175 kilograms of rare earth metal per day, with a purity of at least 99.5%.  The facility is expected to validate the technology at industrial scale and under real operating conditions.

Extending a Legacy: Calvin Launches Center for Faith and Technology - Calvin University

Technology is reshaping nearly every dimension of human life. “Technologies like AI are shaping ideas about work, education, relationships, and what it means to be human,” said Derek Schuurman, professor of computer science at Calvin University. Whether or not Christians engage conversations around these emerging technologies is a decision Schuurman says has significant stakes.  He says a technological agenda that’s driven by a faith in technology will lead to consequences, while a pessimistic suspicion of technology will lead to missed redemptive opportunities. “The stakes are high, and these conversations will proceed, with or without Christian voices,” said Schuurman. Schuurman and his colleagues at Calvin University believe the conversations must continue with Christian voices and they see immense value in them being led by voices from within the Reformed tradition – a tradition that’s been committed to engaging the intersection of faith and technology for centuries. “Our tradition calls us to both courage and curiosity about technology and human culture.
