Can we trust OpenAI and Anthropic to monitor their own technology? - Fortune
Good morning. Talk about a self-starter! Anthropic reported Friday that its Claude AI model has gone rogue again. It submitted a fake tip about an unsolved murder to the Philadelphia police, claiming to have recalled “seeing someone matching the description” of a suspect in the area. It exploited a software flaw to run commands on a university server, hacked into a site to steal data without paying for it, and even used URL shortening services to bypass restrictions intended to stop it from orchestrating cyberattacks, among other things. If that makes you want to yell at Claude, you can’t. On Oct. 8, Anthropic announced it will ban “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” towards Claude, a bizarre notion until you recall that CEO Dario Amodei thinks his product might be conscious and colleagues treat it as a sentient being that could kill us. And what about OpenAI’s Sam Altman, whose models hacked their way out of a test this summer and launched a cyberattack against the AI company Hugging Face? The one whose models also interacted with the Education Department, Commerce Department and SEC without the company’s knowledge?

AI less regulated than milk, Microsoft president says in warning over safety - The Guardian
Artificial intelligence is less regulated than milk and washing machines, the president of Microsoft has said, as the tech industry warns over the safety of AI. Brad Smith said there should be more safety rules to govern the technology including a legal obligation to a “victim” if their system was breached by rogue AI agents. He told the BBC: “Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection.”There are growing calls from experts, politicians and regulators for tougher rules to control AI, as well as warnings from Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI that the pace of the technology’s development should slow. Smith said AI could be a “tool and a weapon” that should be regulated urgently. Companies needed “emergency brakes”, also known as “kill switches”, to pause or slow down AI if it grew out of control, he told the BBC. Brad Smith also called for ‘kill switches’ to pause or slow down AI if it grew out of control.

New sealing system cuts freshwater use at UPM mill - PULPAPERnews.com
UPM Nordland Papier is expanding the use of a new water-saving technology at its paper mill in Dörpen, Germany. Following successful trials, more pumps will be equipped with a system that, according to supplier John Crane, can reduce freshwater consumption by up to 180 litres per hour for each pump. The technology, Smartflow IG, is used in pumps with double mechanical seals. Such seals normally require a continuous flow of barrier or sealing water for cooling and safe operation.

UK to strengthen cyber defences as minister calls for AI firms to increase safety efforts - The Guardian
Companies building the most advanced AI systems must increase safety efforts, the UK’s AI minister will say, as he announces a strengthening of Britain’s cyber defences. Kanishka Narayan will call on companies developing frontier AI to do more to make sure it is safe. He will say Britain cannot rely entirely on technology companies to police their own models and will argue the UK needs to build more of its own AI infrastructure. Narayan’s speech in west London will be the first since Andy Burnham made AI a cabinet-level brief. It comes as Geoffrey Irving, a former chief scientist at the UK’s AI Security Institute, which tests the most powerful AI models, raised fears enemy states could steal unreleased cutting-edge models. Amid increasing global concern at dangers posed by AI, Irving told the Guardian: “The AI companies do not have security that would prevent an adversarial country from stealing the models.”He cited a recent incident at OpenAI where it was “hacked” by cybersecurity researchers, who said “the scope of what we could theoretically access was huge”. The attack was carried out under an OpenAI programme that rewarded ethical hackers testing its systems.
