Lyon has a setback, Dahlin doubtful for Thursday in Toronto - Audacy

Toronto, Ontario (WGR) - While the team had a scheduled off day on Wednesday, Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff joined the "Jeremy and Joe Show" on WGR and did not have positive news on the injury front. Goalie Alex Lyon had been practicing for over a week with a shoulder injury, but Ruff says things aren't going well with his recovery. "Alex Lyon had a little bit of a setback, so he won't be on the ice for a few days," said Ruff with Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase. Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin left in the middle of Monday's 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers, and was seen holding his back before skating off the ice. He missed Tuesday night's 4-3 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens. However, the Sabres head coach had no new update on his status. "I would say it's probably doubtful [for Thursday in Toronto], so we'll see what today brings," Ruff noted. Meanwhile, forward Tyson Kozak had just gotten into his first two games of the season and now he is injured too. "Had an upper-body that we sent him back to Buffalo, and he's being evaluated," Ruff said. In Tuesday's loss to the Canadiens, Montreal went 1-for-3 on the power play, scoring while skating with a 5-on-3 advantage.

NHL Power Rankings: Oilers fly out of the starting gates behind Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard - CBS Sports

Since I expressed concern about the Hurricanes' offense without Seth Jarvis, they've scored 20 goals in four games en route to six consecutive wins. Leave it to the defending champs to make me look stupid. Start etching Evan Bouchard's name on the Norris Trophy (kidding ... maybe). Bouchard is already up to 14 points on the season, and his plus-12 goal differential at five-on-five is absurd.

‘Life’s pretty good’: McDavid soaring as Babcock has Oilers off to red-hot start - TSN

The Edmonton Oilers capped off a three-game road trip in California with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, marking the team’s fifth consecutive win. The Oilers’ only loss on the season came at home in the opener against the Vancouver Canucks - a 6-5 defeat in overtime. In the following game, the Oilers picked up a 9-7 win over those same Canucks. For a team that has struggled to keep the puck out of their net in recent history - even despite trips to the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back years in 2024-25 - it looked like it may be more of the same, even with the newly hired Mike Babcock behind the bench. Since allowing 13 goals in two games to the lowly Canucks, Edmonton has won four straight and allowed just five goals over that span. It looks like everything is quickly clicking for the Oilers this season. “Honestly, it’s pretty impressive how we’re able to score and also play a really solid defensive game,” goalie Devon Levi said after Tuesday’s win over the Kings.

Beyond the Boxscore: Flames give start to finish quality performance in first victory of season - Flames Nation

Beyond the Boxscore: Flames give start to finish quality performance in first victory of seasonThe Calgary Flames kept the pressure up from the start and handily earned their first win of the season over the Anaheim Ducks. CF% – 55.01% || SCF% – 60.97% || HDCF% – 62.55% || xGF% – 61.14%It’s a Team Game – A recurring theme so far this season is the Flames ability to show up and start attacking early. Matt Coronato seems to always be trying to shovel the puck either towards the net or toward a teammate in the slot and he does it from his first shift. The Flames emphasis on attacking the crease has been quite noticeable, this one did not lead to goals in the crease, but second chance opportunities did factor into Adam Klapka’s goal. Offensively they were strong, but they also took advantage of a banged up Ducks team to limit the chances again pretty well. Major gaffs like the Simon Nemec turnover did lead to a goal against, but the Flames never let that get them into a rut. They kept their heads down, kept up with the game plan from start to finish, and eventually it paid off. A solid game worthy of the victory.

'When I win as mayor, I'll get another tattoo': Jeff Leiper on life's twists and turns so far - CBC

Over the past few months, the candidates vying to be Ottawa's next mayor have been laying out their campaign platforms. This week, we get to know the people behind the policies. Today: Jeff Leiper. Most times Jeff Leiper feels like he's lived through something big, he gets a tattoo. One shoulder has an artistic reimagining of the City of Ottawa coat of arms to mark his election as a city councillor. His forearm has a heart with a shovel stuck through it to mark a heart attack that struck him while digging out from a snowstorm in 2019. Those tattoos lay out some of the twists and turns of a man who's been through many transformations in his career, in his life and in his politics. "When I win as mayor, I'll get another tattoo," he said. Montreal Canadiens recall David Reinbacher - Habs Eyes on the Prize

The Montreal Canadiens have recalled defender David Reinbacher from the Laval Rocket ahead of their game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. The team is down to six defenders with the injury to Mike Matheson, and recalling Reinbacher is likely not great news on that front. It could also mean that there is someone else potentially banged up ahead of the second half of the back-to-back on Wednesday.

Charlie McAvoy confirmed what Maple Leafs fans feared about the Fraser Minten trade - Causeway Crowd

When the Boston Bruins traded defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline in March of 2025, little did they know what a fleecing it was going to turn into. General Manager Don Sweeney sent Carlo to Toronto for a first-round draft pick, prospect Fraser Minten, and a fourth-round draft pick. By now, you know that the first-round draft pick from last June's Entry Draft was Top-5 protected. Of course, the Maple Leafs tanked at the end of last season and won the NHL Draft Lottery. They kept the pick and used it to grab Gavin McKenna. However, most Toronto fans are going to say that losing Minten is no big deal, while the true Leafs fans will admit that losing a potential top-six center is a bigger loss than the other fans want to admit. After a breakout 2025-26 season for the Black and Gold, Minten is certainly off to another dream start in the 2026-27 season. Sure, it's only seven games, but defenseman Charlie McAvoy didn't mince words about his young teammate.“He was already amazing last year, and we saw glimpses of what he could be in the future,” McAvoy said, per Belle Fraser of BostonBruins.com after Tuesday night's 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks.

The Connor McDavid show, Devon Levi was sensational, and the Oilers win ugly in L.A. - Oilers Nation

The Connor McDavid show, Devon Levi was sensational, and the Oilers win ugly in L. A. The Edmonton Oilers were in Los Angeles on Tuesday and looking to sweep their California road trip after locking in wins in Anaheim and San Jose. And while the 4-1 win over the Kings wasn’t nearly as surgical as we saw in from the Oilers in their first two stops on this trip, sometimes having Connor McDavid and Devon Levi standing on his head is all you need. Pretty? No. Effective? Absolutely.800 GAMES FOR CONNOR McDAVIDDid anybody else feel old when they saw/read that Tuesday’s game was Connor McDavid’s 800th in his NHL career? It seems like only yesterday when Bill Daly was flipping the golden ticket and every other fanbase was instantly mad at us. My Gord, where has the time gone? On a milestone night like 800 games, it’s hard not to think about the good times and near misses we’ve had with Connor as our captain.

NFL trade watch: 8 players who could be moved before the deadline - theScore

The NFL's Nov. 10 trade deadline is less than a month away, but teams aren't waiting to make big moves. In the last few weeks, four trades sent J. J. McCarthy, Joey Porter Jr., Cam Jurgens, and Marvin Harrison Jr. to new teams. As the deadline continues to approach, more teams will emerge as sellers without much hope of competing for a title. So who stands out as logical candidates to be traded before Nov. 10? Here are eight players who should garner some interest: Khalil Mack, EDGE, ChargersAfter an 0-5 start to the season, the Chargers' hopes of making a playoff run look thoroughly dashed. So there's not much sense in clinging to an aging pass-rusher who is set to become a free agent in 2027. Mack, 35, isn't the same player he was when he won NFL Defensive Player of the Year back in 2016, but he's still surprisingly productive this late in his career. Through five games this season, the nine-time Pro Bowler has three sacks and five tackles for loss. He's already been traded twice in his career, and the Chargers have plenty of incentive to deal him again.

Phillies make Mattingly full-time manager on two-year deal - TSN

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies are keeping Don Mattingly as manager, removing his interim tag and giving him a two-year deal even after a late-season collapse nearly cost the team a playoff spot. The Phillies announced the move Wednesday. Mattingly led the team to a 79-55 record and a spot in the postseason after he replaced the fired Rob Thomson in late April. The Phillies nearly blew a four-game lead for a wild card in the final week of the regular season, then lost in three games to the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Series. The Phillies were 9-19 when they fired Thomson in April after he led the Phillies to four straight playoff appearances, including the 2022 World Series, and consecutive NL East titles. The Phillies and team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski were rebuffed twice by former Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Dombrowski was spurned by Cora when he made the move to fire Thomson and again after the season ended, leaving him in both cases with Mattingly. The 65-year-old Mattingly was hired last offseason to serve as a bench coach and had another year left on his contract.

Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens win their second straight in a shootout shading the Buffalo Sabres - Global News

They were separated by only a goal last spring in Game Seven of their second-round playoff series. This season, though, many believe the Buffalo Sabres aren’t as strong without Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram. However, Buffalo has drafted impressive talent to fill the gaps, including Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius, both of whom could become stars. In the immediate future, though, anxiety lingers in the Sabres organization after Rasmus Dahlin’s back injury, as he stayed in Buffalo for Tuesday night’s contest at the Bell Centre. The Montreal Canadiens dominated the Sabres over 60 minutes, outshooting them 34-17, yet the game went to overtime and then a shootout, with the Canadiens winning 4-3. Justice got the last word. Wilde HorsesThe Canadiens had to switch defensive pairings after Mike Matheson went day-to-day. Thankfully, the club has seen Kaiden Guhle return, pairing with Alexandre Carrier. That left Lane Hutson to find Noah Dobson on his right. The final pairing had Adam Engstrom and Arber Xhekaj. Story continues below advertisement
