A letter to our readers about newspaper endorsements - New Jersey Globe

Newspaper endorsements once carried considerable weight in New Jersey politics, particularly when local editorial boards closely followed candidates, covered their campaigns, and commanded the attention of readers who trusted their judgment. Declining circulation, shrinking newsrooms, and the disappearance of local editorial boards have diminished the influence of newspaper endorsements, raising questions about whether they still persuade voters or simply reinforce opinions already held.

Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov ‘disappointed’ with being benched by coach Marco Sturm but ready to put it behind him

DALLAS — Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov was “disappointed” with being benched by coach Marco Sturm for Saturday night’s victory over the Kings in Los Angeles, but now he’s ready to put it in the rear-view. Sturm made the call, saying Zadorov needed to be better disciplined on the ice after he took a four-minute double minor (elbowing, roughing) at the end of the second period with Boston trailing in Anaheim Friday night. The penalty carried over to the first three minutes of the third period. The Bruins killed it and came from behind to defeat the Ducks. “Obviously, when you have 900 games in this league and 14 years, you don’t want to be in this situation and you feel disappointed, you feel disgusted about it,” Zadorov told the Globe following Monday’s practice at American Airlines Center. “But at the end of the day, it’s a business, so you’ve just got to move on.”Get Sports AlertsThe latest sports news and Globe's most interesting reporting and commentary right to your inbox. Abington woman pleads not guilty to charge she physically abused her 2-month-old baby

An Abington woman pleaded not guilty Monday to charges she physically abused her 2-month-old daughter, causing a brain bleed and bruising to the infant’s face, officials said. Jillian Timmons, 34, was indicted Oct. 1 on a felony charge of assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury, and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment of a child, court records show. She was arraigned in Plymouth Superior Court in Brockton. Timmons was arrested in late July following an investigation, according to a statement from Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office. A lawyer representing Timmons could not immediately be reached for comment. Earlier in July, Timmons brought her infant daughter to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth for treatment, prosecutors said. The infant had a core temperature of 93 degrees and bruises on both sides of her face, according to Cruz’s office. The baby was flown to the neonatal intensive care unit at Boston Children’s Hospital. A mandated reporter who worked at South Shore Hospital alerted authorities about “the suspected physical abuse of Timmons’s daughter,” the district attorney’s office said.

Supreme Court to hear new case on race and school admissions

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Monday that it would revisit the issue of race and school admissions, three years after it sharply restricted affirmative action in higher education. The case involves four selective public middle schools in Montgomery County in Maryland, just outside the nation’s capital. A group of mostly Asian American parents sued the school system after it changed its admissions criteria, saying the new rules unconstitutionally discriminated against Asian American students. In 2023, the Supreme Court struck down race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. The justices did not address other school policies intended to diversify student bodies that do not explicitly address race. Since then, the court has declined to hear several other challenges to admissions criteria at elite public schools, including one from Virginia and another from the military academy at West Point. It takes the votes of four justices to grant review, however, and several justices had previously signaled their interest in continuing to explore the implications of the court’s decision affecting higher education.

Drier, cooler weather brings a taste of fall to South Florida this week - CBS News

Scott Withers is part of the NEXT Weather team as the weekend morning meteorologist for CBS News Miami. The NEXT Weather Team is tracking a cloudy day across South Florida with some pop-up showers and storms rolling across the Metroplex. The cold front that pushed down across the state and triggered the powerful storms and flooding on Saturday night is moving towards the Keys. The heavy downpours created Flash Flood Warnings across Broward County early Sunday morning. All flood advisories and warnings have expired, but the entire area remains under a Level 1 Flash Flood threat. Northern and coastal areas of Broward County were soaked with 5-6 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.  Once the front moves below the Keys, we'll start to dry out and will have lower rain chances for the next week.
