Vermont Green men's head coach Chris Taylor steps down - Vermont Public

Vermont Green FC men’s head coach Chris Taylor is stepping down. Taylor led the Green men’s side to two consecutive USL League Two National Championships in 2025 and 2026. Taylor has been with the club since its inaugural season in 2022, when he served as an assistant coach under sporting director and then-head coach Adam Pfeifer. He took over as head coach in 2025. “This decision has not come lightly or without much thought, but family circumstances and the need to spend more time with my family must take priority in the coming year,” said Taylor in a letter the club shared on Monday. “I have given VGFC everything over the past five years, and I can no longer provide that level of commitment or energy. The only thing that makes this slightly easier is knowing the strength of the club I am leaving behind.”More from Vermont Public: ‘There’s nothing we cannot do,’ Vermont Green FC coach says ahead of national finalTaylor completes his Vermont Green head coaching tenure with a record of 35 wins, seven draws and zero losses across all competitions. He led the club to seven trophies in two seasons, including the two USL2 championships and the 2026 Hank Steinbrecher Cup.

Under siege, Ukraine uses F-16s to shoot down Russia’s jet-powered drones

Ukraine’s small fleet of F-16s — about 50 in all — are in the air so often that they risk breaking down, officials and experts say. About half of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet is grounded, undergoing maintenance elsewhere in Europe, Zelensky said this month. Ukraine is still waiting for additional F-16s that Belgium promised to donate more than three years ago. Only a few dozen Ukrainian pilots at a time can be trained to fly the jets. And running out of ammunition is a top concern. David A. Deptula, a retired US Air Force lieutenant general who is now head of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, a research group near Washington, said Ukraine was “forced to use a relatively small fighter fleet day after day as a substitute for an adequately resourced, layered air defense system.” He also noted that using the F-16s in that way meant Ukrainian forces were “consuming a finite resource faster than they should.”“It’s not a sustainable long-term proposition,” he added.

Nicolas Cage battles sinkhole that threatened his Malibu home

Staff Writer Oct. 19, 2026 12:50 PM PT As fires and high tides batter Malibu, Nicolas Cage is working to rescue his oceanfront home from a different threat: a sinkhole. The actor has secured four permits to repair damage caused by a massive, expanding sinkhole the opened up Sept. 8 outside his home on Sea Level Drive, city records show. The repair work calls for excavation to retrieve a soil sample, as well as debris removal and sandbags to protect the property from strong waves and coastal erosion. The permits, which cost $3,158 in total, were four of 14 granted to Sea Level Drive residents over the last two months as neighbors try to prevent further damage after high tides and rain from Tropical Storm Marie. After the 25-foot-deep hole swallowed Cage’s driveway, the city of Malibu red-tagged 31 homes on the street, forcing evacuations since the damage blocks the only route in and out of the beach side neighborhood. It’s unclear when those evacuation orders will be lifted. It might be a while. According to Malibu.fm, the original contractor handling the repairs was terminated, and a new contractor came on board in early October.

Study finds neighborhood disadvantage increases colon cancer death risk in Georgia - 95.5 WSB

ATLANTA — Georgia is considered a hot spot for colon cancer, and a new study finds that where people live may affect their chances of surviving the disease. Researchers at the University of Kentucky found that people living in disadvantaged neighborhoods face a higher risk of dying from colorectal cancer than those in better-off areas. Associate Professor Justin Xavier Moore said more needs to be done to raise awareness and encourage people in disadvantaged communities to take the disease seriously. “Overall, if you’re from a disadvantaged community or neighborhood, you have an 18% increased risk of dying,” Moore said. For people diagnosed with early-onset colorectal cancer, that increased risk rises to 30%, Moore said.

Kayem recalls 1.5 million pounds of meat products, including Fenway Franks

The USDA on Saturday announced a recall on dozens of pork, beef, and chicken products from Chelsea-based Kayem Foods Inc., the brand known for its Fenway Franks. The more than 1.5 million pounds of hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and other products have been voluntarily recalled after the company learned the goods had been stored in a cooler that experienced “temperature deviation,” Kayem said in a statement on Friday. “Our business depends on providing consumers with safe food of the highest quality,” said Matt Monkiewicz, Kayem Foods president and CEO. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are undertaking this voluntary recall.”The meat items were distributed from the company’s Chelsea warehouse to stores and food service locations across the US and in Hong Kong, according to the US Department of Agriculture. There have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption of the products, and anyone concerned about an illness should contact a doctor, the USDA statement said. Many of the products recalled are hot dogs and hams that can be stored for long periods in the freezer. All the items affected by the recall were shipped between June 7, 2026, and Oct.

Alaska Democrat Peltola could cause headaches for her party's Senate leaders - KDBC

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Alaska Democrat Mary Peltola, the former congresswoman seeking a Senate seat, could cause headaches for party leaders if she joins the upper chamber. She’s so far campaigned as most election experts would expect of a Democrat in a reliably Republican state, bucking her party on positions Alaskans see as too far left and vowing to put her constituents over her party’s brass. A single-term House member, Peltola’s even called for limits to the time lawmakers can serve in Congress, which she said Friday was never meant to be a “lifetime appointment.”Top D. C. Democrats, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have supported her campaign, but they may not be as enthusiastic about her place in the Senate should she make herself comfortable. Peltola's emphasized her willingness to cross the aisle, potentially posing an obstacle for her Democratic colleagues as they prepare to take more forceful action against the GOP. “I’ll stand up to anyone, including people in my own party, who doesn’t understand what Alaska needs,” Peltola wrote in an op-ed earlier this month.

GOP nominee Minogue says he’ll govern without a lieutenant governor after Oliver's arrest

Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike Minogue plans to have no lieutenant governor in his administration if he wins the general election, a decision he announced after Republican candidate for the No. 2 job, Shawn Oliver, suspended his campaign Sunday following a drunken driving arrest. Oliver was arrested in New Bedford late Saturday night on operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, after Oliver reportedly crashed his SUV into five parked cars and flipped his car. He was sent to the hospital for injuries, and local police confirmed no one else was seriously injured. He pleaded not guilty in New Bedford District Court on Monday morning, according to the New Bedford Light, but suspended his statewide campaign. Minogue had called for Oliver to suspend his campaign Sunday morning, and at a press availability in his hometown of Hamilton on Monday afternoon, the gubernatorial candidate outlined his plan if he wins in November. "I am glad he's safe, but at this point, I called for him to suspend and terminate his campaign, and he will not be my lieutenant governor," Minogue said.
