Eliminating pot sales in Mass. would set ‘dangerous precedent,’ says ex-NFL star Ricky Williams

A former NFL running back and cannabis advocate is warning that if Bay Staters vote to eliminate retail sales of recreational marijuana via Question 8, it “could set a really dangerous precedent.” From a dispensary in downtown Boston, Ricky Williams urged voters Monday morning to vote “no” on the measure, reflecting on how he uses cannabis to help with social anxiety and how other athletes use it to cope. As campaigns near the two-week countdown to Election Day, supporters of the measure maintain that recreational cannabis is harming public and mental health. “In my football career, I was known for failing drug tests for cannabis. And my experience is, cannabis really helped me deal with the mental, and emotional, and physical stress of being a professional athlete,” Williams told reporters. “Our teams ask us to go out there and put our bodies on the line, and I think we should have all reasonable means to be able to take care of ourselves, and that’s why cannabis has been so important for me.”Williams is co-founder of a group called Project Champion, a bipartisan organization of former professional athletes who advocate for legal, regulated cannabis markets.

Alabama has 4 constitutional amendments on the ballot in November. Here's what they're about - WBHM

Alabama voters will decide on four proposed constitutional amendments in next month’s general election. The measures range from controversial to more perfunctory. WBHM’s Richard Banks spoke with Alabama Reflector editor Brian Lyman for an overview of the measures. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. Let's talk about this year's Amendment 1. That has to do with filling a vacancy in the lieutenant governor's office and some ancillary sort of things like setting salaries. For example, if the person elected lieutenant governor this year for some reason was no longer in office in 2028, under current law, they couldn't have another election for that office until 2030. This amendment would allow the state to schedule an election for the office in 2028. The [amendment] also cleans up some things with expenses, and things like that, that are essentially de facto right now in the Alabama Senate.

New Casper-Natrona County International Airport tower among Wyoming projects to receive USDA funding - Oil City News

CASPER, Wyo. — A $3 million federal grant to help build a new air traffic control tower at the Casper-Natrona International Airport is part of a broader $146 million investment in rural Wyoming infrastructure, housing and economic development made recently by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The $3 million Community Facilities Grant from USDA Rural Development supports a critical project replacing the airport’s 72-year-old control tower. The existing facility, built in 1954, stands under 50 feet tall, which airport director Glenn Januska previously said makes it shorter than modern standard towers and and among the oldest active towers in the Federal Aviation Administration system. The planned replacement will reach approximately 132 feet.

Mississippi attorney general says use of force was justified in death of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley

Mississippi’s attorney general says a Senatobia police officer was justified in the use of force in the June shooting death of a 1-year-old boy while responding to a shoplifting call. The conclusion of the state’s investigation into the shooting death of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley follows months of mourning and calls for justice, both nationally and in the small town where the shooting took place, about 40 miles south of Memphis. The shooting occurred in mid-June as Senatobia officers responded to a shoplifting call at a local Walmart, where they saw Vellesiya Wiley, Kohen’s mother, carrying her son as she and a friend left the store, got into a car, and began driving away. Wiley and her friend are both Black. Police reports indicate diapers and baby clothes were allegedly stolen. According to a statement released shortly after the shooting by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the car drove toward law enforcement, prompting an officer to fire into the car, striking Kohen and his mother’s friend.
