On World Teachers' Day, Cambodia Ministry of education and UNESCO - UNESCO

The world's demands on the next generation are changing, and Cambodia's own education reform journey reflects its ambitions to develop young people ready to meet these challenges. Cambodia's Pentagonal Strategy, its roadmap for growth, employment, equity, efficiency and sustainability, sets out to realise the Cambodia Vision 2050 of becoming a high-income country, anchored in Human Capital Development as its very first pillar. This year, Cambodia celebrates World Teachers' Day under the theme “Teachers are the pillars of modern pedagogy for building 21st-century human resources” to recognise the central role of teachers in preparing the next generation for the world’s changing demands. On 5 October 2026, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) hosted a national celebration in Phnom Penh at the National Institute of Education (NIE), presided over by H. E. Dr Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, and Mr Flavio Bonetti, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia. Around 1,300 teachers, education leaders and development partners attended this annual national event.

Fuel from South Korea being shipped to Russia as Ukraine war grinds on - The Guardian

Fuel is being shipped from South Korea to Russia via sanctioned tankers as Moscow scrambles for supplies amid the war in Ukraine, a move one expert said “undermines” Seoul’s public backing for Kyiv. Guardian analysis of port records and ship-tracking data found that in July and August over 176,000 tonnes of fuel, mostly diesel, was loaded at several South Korean ports on to seven tankers that made 14 voyages to Russia’s far east. Three of the vessels were under sanctions by the UK and EU, and one took on its cargo through a ship-to-ship transfer in South Korean waters – a method that can obscure where a cargo came from and lets ships avoid calling at port terminals. “It is shocking that EU-sanctioned tankers loaded fuel at South Korean ports and carried it to Russia”, said Isaac Levi, an analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a Finnish thinktank. “This undermines the sanctions regime and South Korea’s support for Ukraine.”Seoul has sent Ukraine humanitarian aid and non-lethal military supplies such as helmets, body armour and demining vehicles, and in 2023 pledged $2.3bn in support, most of it in loans.

On World Architecture Day 2026: A Call to Build Better, Build Differently, and Share Resources - ArchDaily

Transformation of 530 dwellings / Lacaton & Vassal + Frédéric Druot + Christophe Hutin architecture. Image Courtesy of Philippe RuaultPublished on October 05, 2026The International Union of Architects designates the first Monday of October as World Architecture Day each year, aligning it with the United Nations' World Habitat Day. This year, both occasions are drawing attention to the global housing crisis as a fundamental element of human dignity, inclusion, and well-being. The UIA's motto reads: "Housing is a Human Right. Build It. " The organization calls on architects to contribute to advancing equitable access to housing through design, research, and advocacy. From a holistic perspective, the crisis consists not only of a shortage of residential buildings, but of multiple, interconnected barriers to accessing an adequate place to live. The challenge calls on the dual nature of the architect's work: the capacity for abstract design thinking, and the practical knowledge to transform material reality.

To cull or not to cull: Greenland debates fate of world’s slowest shark - The Guardian

‘When I accidentally catch a shark, I bring it to my dogs,” Henrik Jensen, a 27-year-old from Greenland’s west coast, says casually. “I don’t let it back down because [the sharks] bully me and cut my lines.”Jensen has fished for halibut in Ilulissat, Greenland’s third largest town, for a decade. He works an hour north of the town’s main iceberg-laden fishery, which sustains the livelihood of nearly 400 fishers. There, the halibut are bigger and more plentiful, but so are the Greenland sharks. “This year I’ve lost around 6,000 hooks in total. Sometimes we lose 30,000 Danish krone [£3,440] a day,” says Jensen. The Greenland shark is one of the least understood species on the planet. As well as being the world’s slowest shark, it is the second-largest carnivorous species, after the white shark, according to the Shark Trust. Reaching about six to seven metres in length, they can live for more than 400 years. For a long time they were thought to be completely blind, although scientists have recently discovered this may not be true.

State of the World’s Girls 2026: Change her forecast - Plan International

Climate disasters are increasingly recognised as a crisis for girls’ health, safety and futures. Floods, droughts and extreme heat can disrupt healthcare, education and protection systems when communities need them most. These disruptions place additional pressure on families and communities, making girls and young women more vulnerable to violence, child marriage and unintended pregnancy while limiting their opportunities and choices. Plan International’s flagship annual report on the State of the World’s Girls in 2026, draws on the experiences of more than 5,000 girls and young women aged 15-24 across Bangladesh, Kenya, Peru, Senegal and Zimbabwe, alongside analysis spanning 52 countries over 3 decades.
