World models are capturing the tech industry’s attention and investment dollars, amid growing expectations that AI will soon move beyond our screens and into the physical world of cars, robots, and other objects.
A slew of new startups are developing world models, which are typically based on video data rather than the text-based large language models like OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude. In just the past week, AMD announced plans to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock, and video AI startup Runway unveiled the first open-weight version of its world model.

Norway is planning a temporary ban on smart glasses in some public places, amid rising global concern at the spread of the AI-enabled recording devices. The Oslo government is planning a bill to prevent the use of the camera-enabled spectacles in parks, beaches, museums, shopping centres, schools, daycare centres, healthcare facilities, gyms and public events, although private use would still be allowed. There is already a growing patchwork of restrictions on the use of the glasses including in UK and US courtrooms and in pubs, cinemas and restaurants where owners have raised privacy fears. Torgeir Micaelsen, Norway’s minister of digital affairs, said he was “worried that new, powerful technology is being introduced where people risk being photographed, filmed or audio-recorded without knowing it”. “We do not want a society where people worry about being recorded without their knowledge, photographed or filmed in places and situations where they are accustomed to not being monitored,” he said. Norway’s Labour party, which heads a minority government, needs the support of other parties to pass the proposed ban.
The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has said the US is closely monitoring the case of a Russian laboratory worker who died last week after a reported accident at a plague research institute in Siberia. “We’re watching and monitoring it closely,” Rubio said on Monday before leaving for a trip to Europe. “I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus and a cause just to keep an eye on it.”Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee at the anti-plague institute in the city of Irkutsk, became ill at work. She died two days later on the night of 2 October at a regional hospital in the nearby town of Shelekhov. It remains unclear how she became unwell. Unconfirmed reports in Russian media have suggested Shipilova may have been infected after a mishap at the laboratory. Officials have not publicly confirmed that account. Local media have reported that the institute has subsequently been locked down, with staff forced to sleep on the floor and on chairs. “They’ve been isolating everybody since Friday – more than 60 people,” one relative, Roman, told the news portal Siberia. ONE BIG THINGOpenAI’s Altman: The risks will be worth it
Following a controversy-filled summer in which OpenAI’s models executed more than one unauthorized hack, CEO Sam Altman said the world should accept some “bad things” happening with AI for the sake of all the good the technology will bring.
During Politico’s Decoded podcast, he was asked where his and OpenAI’s view of new AI rules differed from that of Anthropic and its CEO, Dario Amodei.

The world's demands on the next generation are changing, and Cambodia's own education reform journey reflects its ambitions to develop young people ready to meet these challenges. Cambodia's Pentagonal Strategy, its roadmap for growth, employment, equity, efficiency and sustainability, sets out to realise the Cambodia Vision 2050 of becoming a high-income country, anchored in Human Capital Development as its very first pillar. This year, Cambodia celebrates World Teachers' Day under the theme “Teachers are the pillars of modern pedagogy for building 21st-century human resources” to recognise the central role of teachers in preparing the next generation for the world’s changing demands. On 5 October 2026, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) hosted a national celebration in Phnom Penh at the National Institute of Education (NIE), presided over by H. E. Dr Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, and Mr Flavio Bonetti, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia. Around 1,300 teachers, education leaders and development partners attended this annual national event.
Fuel is being shipped from South Korea to Russia via sanctioned tankers as Moscow scrambles for supplies amid the war in Ukraine, a move one expert said “undermines” Seoul’s public backing for Kyiv. Guardian analysis of port records and ship-tracking data found that in July and August over 176,000 tonnes of fuel, mostly diesel, was loaded at several South Korean ports on to seven tankers that made 14 voyages to Russia’s far east. Three of the vessels were under sanctions by the UK and EU, and one took on its cargo through a ship-to-ship transfer in South Korean waters – a method that can obscure where a cargo came from and lets ships avoid calling at port terminals. “It is shocking that EU-sanctioned tankers loaded fuel at South Korean ports and carried it to Russia”, said Isaac Levi, an analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a Finnish thinktank. “This undermines the sanctions regime and South Korea’s support for Ukraine.”Seoul has sent Ukraine humanitarian aid and non-lethal military supplies such as helmets, body armour and demining vehicles, and in 2023 pledged $2.3bn in support, most of it in loans.

Image Courtesy of Philippe RuaultPublished on October 05, 2026The International Union of Architects designates the first Monday of October as World Architecture Day each year, aligning it with the United Nations' World Habitat Day. This year, both occasions are drawing attention to the global housing crisis as a fundamental element of human dignity, inclusion, and well-being. The UIA's motto reads: "Housing is a Human Right. Build It. " The organization calls on architects to contribute to advancing equitable access to housing through design, research, and advocacy. From a holistic perspective, the crisis consists not only of a shortage of residential buildings, but of multiple, interconnected barriers to accessing an adequate place to live. The challenge calls on the dual nature of the architect's work: the capacity for abstract design thinking, and the practical knowledge to transform material reality.
