World Mental Health Day: let’s talk and listen - European Commission

Anxiety and depression are the most common mental disorders. Such conditions can affect all aspects of our lives, including relationships with family, friends and community. They can result from or lead to problems at school and at work. And the economic consequences are substantial. According to a 2023 study, nearly half of Europeans declared having experienced an emotional or psychological problem such as feeling depressed or anxious. World Mental Health Day on October 10 serves as a reminder that good mental health is important and how we can prioritise it in our lives. This year’s theme ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’ stresses how conversations about mental health make a difference.  At EU level, mental health is already a health priority. In 2023, it adopted a comprehensive approach to mental health, which is helping EU countries and interested groups to take swift action to deal with mental health challenges. It focuses on prevention, addressing behavioural risk factors and social, environmental, and commercial conditions that play their part in the development of mental health disorders.

Taylor Knibb, four-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion and 2024 T100 World Champion, just added the most prestigious accolade to her trophy case: a win in Kona at the Ironman World Championship. And there was a key theme to her strategy that made it possible: ensure you make it to the finish line. Last year, both Knibb and Lucy Charles-Barclay failed to finish despite leading the race at different stages, an unprecedented occurrence in Kona, with Knibb leading right until the closing miles before collapsing on the pavement. This year, Knibb recalled advice from Paula Newby-Fraser that, if there’s ever a doubt about whether you should push harder or ensure you can make it to the finish, you should always prioritize reaching the finish.
