‘It’s really the exception that it’s not MS.’ Why Christina Applegate’s misdiagnosis is quite rare.

Applegate said that her symptoms first started in 2021 with numbness in her toes and pain up her legs. She was tested for “everything under the sun.” “Brain, spinal MRIs, spinal tap, nerve tests. I progressively got worse... Then there was the day the doctor showed me almost 40 lesions on my brain. That was my answer for everything that was going on.” Her doctor wanted to take Applegate off the regimen infusion to watch her B-cells and saw no change. That began a study into her diagnosis. “She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS’,” a tearful Applegate told her co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who has been public about her own battle with MS. “You don’t get misdiagnosed and all of a sudden you’re better... in some ways I’ve gotten worse,” she said. “It’s going to be an online investigation my doctors are going to be getting into: why did this happen? I have every symptom of someone with MS. There are many things that mirror MS.”Dr. Michael Levy, director of the Neuroimmunology Clinic and Research Laboratory at Mass General Brigham and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, said that reversal would be unusual.

Why MS can be hard to diagnose, after Christina Applegate reveals misdiagnosis

Five years after revealing she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder multiple sclerosis (MS), actress Christina Applegate has announced that she was misdiagnosed. Speaking on Tuesday's episode of her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts with actress Jamie Lynn Sigler, Applegate said she wasn't happy to learn of the misdiagnosis, revealing that she has "gotten worse in some ways" and is "back at square one that I don't know what's going on with me. "Doctors say there's no single test that can diagnose MS. That determination depends upon multiple factors, including a patient's symptoms and various test results, all of which can change over time. Additionally, improper application of diagnostic criteria, and that fact that MS symptoms can resemble those of other conditions, can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis.
