Researchers have restored quantum squeezing by 7.6% ± 2.6% using a new quantum smoothing method, exceeding improvements seen in standard state purification techniques. The experiment split the output of an optical parametric oscillator, creating ‘observed’ and ‘unobserved’ channels to model how lost quantum information impacts system coherence. This approach allowed the team to demonstrate a 10.3% ± 1.6% improvement in state purification, combating decoherence, a major challenge for realizing practical quantum information technologies, by using both past and future measurement data.
A 7.6% ± 2.6% restoration of quantum squeezing was achieved through a novel quantum smoothing method, exceeding gains observed through state purification alone. The technique, demonstrated using an optical parametric oscillator, addresses a fundamental challenge in quantum information science: recovering coherence lost to environmental decoherence. Unlike conventional filtering, this smoothing approach actively reconstructs lost quantum information by accounting for how the environment interacts with the system.

Quantum Annealers Show Full Magnetic Reversal In Antiferromagnets - Quantum Zeitgeist
Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have observed full saturation and reversal of the hysteresis curve in antiferromagnetic models using programmable quantum annealers. This finding challenges expectations, as antiferromagnets typically resist magnetization, making complete reversal an unusual result. The team detected Barkhausen-like noise, typically associated with ferromagnetic materials, alongside emergent magnetic domains created by quantum fluctuations. These fluctuations mediate magnetic memory within the antiferromagnets, demonstrating a direct link between quantum effects and a material property. The team implemented a sampling-based magnetic hysteresis protocol on these processors to investigate magnetic memory within antiferromagnetic models, revealing unexpected results about how these materials respond to external fields. This approach allows for emulation of magnetic hysteresis experiments, offering a new avenue for studying complex magnetic phenomena.
