I Just Learned What The First Chimp In Space Did While He Was Up There, And What Was Up His Rectum
My friend and longtime collaborator Carrie McLaren, who I’ve been working with since the ’90s ‘zine boom, has a new physical ‘zine she’s writing and publishing called Ape Shit, which focuses on, you know, monkeys and apes and non-human primates, and how we humans interact with them. It’s interesting stuff, and I’m excited to help out with the next issue by writing about Ham, the first chimpanzee in space. I actually met Ham when I was a kid, at the Asheboro Zoo in North Carolina. I think he’s the only astronaut I’ve actually met? Definitely the most hirsute.

Heart tests suggest astronauts could tolerate Mars' gravity after months in space - Medical Xpress
A trip to Mars may be more feasible than previously thought, suggests a new study led by Northwestern Medicine, UT Southwestern and UT Houston that tracked the heart function of 13 astronauts during roughly six-month missions aboard the International Space Station.
In vitro and in vivo evaluation of liposomes constructed with Rg3 as a cholesterol substitute for tumor therapy - Nature

AbstractConventional cholesterol liposomes have poor stability, rapid clearance, and toxicity. This study used Rg3 to replace cholesterol for constructing curcumin-loaded liposomes (PCRL) and evaluated their potential for enhanced hepatocellular carcinoma therapy. Curcumin-loaded liposomes were prepared with Rg3 (PCRL) and cholesterol (PCCL) via thin-film hydration. Physicochemical properties, protein corona, in vitro behavior, in vivo tumor targeting, antitumor efficacy, and biosafety were assessed in H22 tumor-bearing mice. PCRL exhibited smaller particle size, superior storage/plasma stability, and comparable membrane packing to PCCL. Protein corona analysis showed reduced adsorption of immunoglobulin-like and complement proteins, prolonging blood circulation > 24 h and enhancing tumor accumulation.
