I was surprised and saddened to read about another elementary school shooting, this one in Oregon, on page six instead of the front page (“Gunman attacks elementary school in Oregon; 4 killed,” Oct. 16). Have we become so inured to gun violence in our schools that it is buried on page six? That story should be printed in big, bold letters so that we can’t escape confronting this continuing horror and stop it. Catherine JankowskiPlymouthThe next child to be murderedI’m thinking about a happy child on his way to school this morning. I’m imagining him skipping along, maybe planning his Halloween costume. I don’t know his name, or where he lives, but we will all know it too soon. He is the next child who will be killed by the neglect and impotency of the nation’s adults who will fail to protect him from the scourge of gun violence that will take his precious life. When he is rushed to the hospital, the doctors will try everything they can think of to save his life. But unlike the doctors, the adults who condemned him to this fate will allow themselves to be drawn into the absurd debate about what policy might work best rather than doing all the obvious things they could have done.
