Have we become numb to school shootings?

I was surprised and saddened to read about another elementary school shooting, this one in Oregon, on page six instead of the front page (“Gunman attacks elementary school in Oregon; 4 killed,” Oct. 16). Have we become so inured to gun violence in our schools that it is buried on page six? That story should be printed in big, bold letters so that we can’t escape confronting this continuing horror and stop it. When he is rushed to the hospital, the doctors will try everything they can think of to save his life. But unlike the doctors, the adults who condemned him to this fate will allow themselves to be drawn into the absurd debate about what policy might work best rather than doing all the obvious things they could have done.

While resources to help survivors were available in the immediate aftermath of the tragedies, resiliency centers are for the long-haul. “Mass violence is different from other forms of violence,” said Caruso, who has been working with violence victims for more than a decade. “It’s violating. I don’t have a better word for it. It violates the whole community, and it interrupts your feeling of safety.” Rachel Caruso, executive director of the Ever Hope Center, which opened Oct. 14.
