Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II: The Kotaku Review

The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is filled with memorable moments that serve as the foundation to its story, moments that make the whole season feel like a kind of brutal, heartbreaking symphony in which every thread and refrain serves a purpose, all coming together in ways that make each element resonate with more power than it ever could on its own., It’s almost as ifStudio Trigger and CD Projekt Red knew they had to hit these incredible narrative highs and worked backwards from them, ensuring that every minute detail of its 10-episode run cleanly paved the way to its most memorable setpieces. I’m thinking of scenes like Edgerunners’ protagonist David Martinez watching his mentor Maine succumb to cyberpsychosis as Trigger depicts David’s immediate, gut-wrenching grief in the most visually disturbing way with a few seconds of detailed animation, as well as the final moments in which netrunner Lucy, having dreamt of going to the moon for her entire life, finally makes it because of her lover’s actions. These only hit because Edgerunners uses every frame of animation to earn them.

Ready Or Not: The Kotaku Review
“Bring Order To Chaos.” That’s how tactical shooter Ready or Not sums up your role as part of Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT. As a commander, you lead an “element” of four officers through a gauntlet of ripped-from-the-headlines catastrophes in fictional Los Suenõs, California—the “City of Dreams,” not angels. Some missions merely touch a nerve, while others evoke mononymic American tragedies like Columbine, Pulse, Waco, or Vegas with the serial numbers filed off. Developer VOID Interactive has stated that it intends Ready or Not to immerse players in split-second, volatile situations, leaving them with an appreciation for the totalizing physical and psychological strain these officers endure for our sake. Order comes to chaos at the end of a gun. You mash X to scream “I wanna see hands!” at everyone in sight, civilians and gunmen alike. It’ll piss you off when they don’t comply. You’re here to help. Non-lethal means of submission will net you the best rating at the end of a mission, but nobody’s perfect. Indulge me in a quick history break.

The Street Fighter Movie: The Kotaku Review
From the moment Legendary Pictures and Capcom revealed its new live-action Street Fighter, there was a ceiling placed above it. This movie could either be so bad it’s good or so bad it’s just bad. There wasn’t a third option, at least, that’s what I thought for around a year. It turns out, there is a third option: it’s both. Street Fighter is basically two movies in one: It is one half the aforementioned “so bad it’s good” flick, running into walls hard enough to break through them as it shatters the shackles of a faithful adaptation and becomes an incomprehensible parody of Capcom’s fighting games. Also equally present is the “so bad it’s bad” film that is baffling from both a filmmaking and storytelling perspective. Both of these movies are connected by fights that are fun to watch and disconnected by ones it refuses to show. The strained threads that manage to hold it all together are a constant barrage of bits of varying quality that every actor commits to with such tenacity that it all somehow turns around to being brilliant? To be clear: Street Fighter’s a bad movie.

Cyberpunk 2077 movie "won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story", CD Projekt Red boss confirms, and boy do I think that's the right move
A more Edgerunners-esque original tale from Night City looks to be in the offing Since the existence of plans for a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action adaptation from devs CD Projekt Red and Paramount Pictures was revealed last week, I've been hoping it won't take the form of porting V's tale from the game to the big screen. Such a thing wouldn't necessarily be terrible, but I like my game adaptations a bit more on the original story side of things, as Cyberpunk tie-in anime series Edgerunners has been. The good news is that one of CD Projekt Red's big bosses has now confirmed that this adaptation won't be beat-for-beat retelling of 'Honey, there's a Keanu in my brain'.
